The month of Tishri with its sacred holy days and its happy
holidays, will come to an end with the celebration of the Feast
of conclusion. Little likelihood there is that in the synagogs
throughout the land, the vast multitudes who came as ardent
worshippers on Rosh Ilashono and Yam Kippur will "tread the
courts of God" during these closing days of the festal season.
And yet, these days, too, have a message that is not un-
worthy of consideration. Every end marks a new beginning
and it is fitting that with the close of the special celebrations
of the month, the mind of the Jew should realize that he stands
at the beginning of a season's religious activities. He should
feel that upon him should fall a portion of the burden of carry-
awakened in his soul by fast and prayer should have left no
enduring impression upon him, so that he should be content to
go on in the same spirit of lassitude and indifference to things
spiritual as had previously marked his attitude.
At this season of the year, the activities not only of the
synagog itself, but of all the various organizations affiliated
with the synagog are resumed. Let every Jew in the community
fe elthat upon him should fall a portion of the burden of carry-
ing on the works of education, of philanthropy. of civic and
social service sponsored by them. No man and no woman
should stand on the outside but each should feel himself to be
link in the great chain of Israel's brotherhood and as such,
a one
upon whom the strength and the permanence of the whole
group is dependent.
Let then the Feast of Conslusion really be to all of us a time
of beginnings and let us take up our spiritual tasks with earnest-
ness, with zeal, and with true devotion. Unless this be the case,
the solemn warnings of the Tishri celebrations shall have been
in vain. God grant it be not so.

The Worth of Sermons.

It is frequently said and perhaps sincerely believed by many
that sermons have little or no effect upon the lives of the people.
Perhaps to a certain extent this is true. Unquestionably much
dribble is preached from some pulpits and many discourses are
delivered that do not deeply touch the soul life of the pepole.
But this is by no means universally the case. And especially
at this season, the preacher who brings to his people an earnest
message and who speaks his words without fear and without
flinching even though they be unpleasant words at times. is
almost sure to be gratified by having many people tell him that
his sermon has so touched their lives as to give them a new out-
look and a new sense of moral obligation.

On frosty fall night, what a heartfelt Might
You 1,-,1 by a scam, cosy fire!
There is naught thrills the soul like Brite.Lite Cannel Coal;
It brings just the cheer you desire.

Can you think of anything more satisfying these
chilly, October evenings than a ruddy, cheerful
open fire ?
You who are so fortunate as to have a fireplace—
are you getting the enjoyment out of it you should ?
Lots of people aren't so lucky as you.
Think of the fascination of watching the play of
the firelight from a big, easy chair while you and
the little Mother build castles in Spain!
Think of the story hour for the children—the
roasted chestnuts—the toasted marshmallows—
cider, doughnuts and apples—contented evenings
before a brightly glowing fire that makes electric
lights unnecessary.
Don't wait another minute but enjoy that grate
fire now while you need it most. Order a ton or
two of U. F. & S. Brite-Lite Cann el Coal. It
burns very brightly, lasts long and is exceptionally
clean to handle.
