Rabbi Jehudah, one of the wisest
Hebrew scholars of antiquity, express-
es himself in the Talmud with the
following sentiment: "Thies Shofar
Chochmo we'eino Melocho," the blow-
ing of the Shofar is wisdom and not
toil. You may reasonably question
wherein lies the wisdom of the simple
sounds that compromise the blowing
of the ram's horn, especially since it
is physical and not mental exertion
that is required. My interpretation of
this sentiment is that Rabbi Jehudah
aimed at a very thoughtful manner
to explain the Tkias Shofar. Its sig-
nificance ran be brought out com-
prehensively by taking the example
of a man desiring to build a house.
First he must prepare the plan, that
is, the wisdom of the architecture,
and secondly he must procure common
workingmen to build the structure ac-
cording to the plan. It would in-
deed he foolish for him to consider
the house built by merely obtaining
a plan of it.
The blowing of the Shofar is merely
a call to awaken the Jewish heart. It
is an appeal to the Jew to pause while
amid the press and stress of work,
amid the hurry and worry of every-
day life, to give some thought to his
Creator, to wipe from memory the
wrong doings of the pact and re-
solve to do better in the future. Ram-
barn, the well known Hebrew scholar,
declared as the significance of the
word Shofar "Shapru Maaseichem,"
beautify and improve your doings. It
can therefore be seen that the blow-
ing of the Shofar can be likened to
a plan of a house, for without it being
carried out it is worthless. The fol-
lowing anecdote will illustrate the
point clearly.
A farmer, upon coming into town,
was amazed to see a man walking and
drumming, and people hurrying in a
certain direction. lie walked up to
a man and inquired the reason for
his drumming. "Why, you idiot,"
was the reply, "don't you know that
I am sounding the call for extinguish-
ing a fire?" Coincidently with the
farmer's return to his village, a fire
broke out. Running to the scene of
the fire, the farmer cried: "Do not
waste your time and energy exting-
uishing the fire. I have a beter reme-
dy." He thereupon produced a whistle
and began to blow on it. To his sur-
prise the flames grew larger instead
of diminishing. Then he told the
story of the drummer in the big city,
and a number of his wiser friends
explained to him that the drummer
was merely sounding the call for peo-
ple to come and extinguish the fire.
That the work of stopping the flames
was yet to be done.
Thus, it is not sufficient to he mere-
ly content with listening to Tkias Sho-
far in the synagogue, for that is only
the first step, the "Chochmo," the wis-
dom, and not the "Melocho," the prac-
tical work.

L J. ROSENBERG To
CHOOSE DANTE BODY

Louis . James Rosenberg, local rep-
resentative of the National Dante
Committee, has received the following
letter from the organization in New
York, urging the co-operation of all
organized bodies in the celebration of
six hundreth anniversary of the im-
mortal poet:
"The National Dante Committee
does its best to promote the recogni-
tion of the Anniversary, but does not
side with any faction or religion.
Members of our Committee are asked
to represent us in any official Dante
celebration, and often they say a few
words on behalf of the Committee.
I would advise you when you have
time to assist to all the important
celebrations, he they Catholic, Pro-
testant, Jewish, Italian or American.
If the American public has not as yet
been interested I should suggest your
forming a small Committee asking
Mayor, Governor of State and so on
to assist you, and according to the
importance of the members of the
Committee and the branch in which
each is especially influential ask
them to sign letters addressed to local
institutions in which they are invited
to commemorate Dante, by reading
and hearing about him. The women's
Clubs have been very much interested
in different parts of the country. In
the letters you state that as the rep-
resentative of the Committee you
have at their disposal the Dante
booklet, the Pageant, that you can
write to get appropriate speakers if
funds are available, and that the
Committee has a remarkable collect-
lion of stereopticon slides which are
hired out on request of our repre-
sentatives."
Mr. Rosenberg will appoint his
committee in a few days.
