the Whole Story

You want daily figure totals that will tell you the whole story
about every transaction in your business. The quickest and
easiest way to get those totals is by using Burroughs Machines
where machine accuracy will protect you against errors of mental
calculations.

ADDING

With a Burroughs Adding
Machine you can list and add
your sales by clerks and by lines,
list and add your purchases by
departments, check your in-
voices, check your credit register
and handle all miscellaneous
figuring in your business.
The accuracy of machine
figuring often uncovers leaks
and losses that would drain heavily on your profits if not discov-
ered in time. In the prevention of errors, and the time-saving
made possible by machine methods, a Burroughs Adding Ma-
chine will more than pay its way in your business.

Posting accounts receivable
ledgers and writing statements
are two jobs that the Burroughs
Automatic Book keeping Ma-
chine handles more easily and
more economically than you can
handle them in any other way.
With the Burroughs you have an
extended balance on each account every day—a safeguard against
over-extension of credit. You know that every item is correctly
posted, for the Burroughs offers positive proof of posting. With
balances extended every day, taking a trial balance at the end
of the month becomes a mere formality.
Writing statements on a Burroughs insures neatness, accu-
racy and economy. Your statement work becomes such a simple
job that you are sure to get your statements out on time—and
that means better collections.
Many Burroughs Machines can be bought at prices as low as
before the war—with small down-payments and easy terms.
Start the New Year right with complete and accurate records
of your business.
Let us show you how you can actually save money by han-
dling all your accounting work on Burroughs Machines.

A ROSH HASHONA MESSAGE

Fall Suitings

403 Liggett Building

I have an unwavering faith that humanity grows con-
stantly better and not worse. I have an unshakable con-
viction that tomorrow is destined to be brighter than today
even as today is supreme over yesterday. "The good old
days" is a pretty phrase but it will not bear critical an-
alysis. Civilization has builded on the past, even as the
future shall use the achievements of today as so many
stepping stones to greater things.
It is because I hold to these views that I can look the
future squarely in the face and without mental reservation
express the hope that for Israel and for all humanity the
New Year may be in every sense a happy one.
The Jew needs today, to re-interpret his past not in
terms of martyrdom but rather in the terms of spiritual
mastery. He needs to think of himself not as one who has
been the victim of defeat but rather as one triumphant
and achieving, who has contributed much to the onward
going of civilization's processes.
And he must look at present things in proper perspec-
tive. There is a tendency among many of our people to
magnify out of all clue proportion the power of our present
day persecutors. In saying this, I would not underesti-
mate the malice and the wickedness of those who with un-
limited wealth at their disposal are using it for no better
purpose than to besmirch the character of the Jew and to
sow the seeds of race hatred and religious prejudice among
the people of America. But I do feel that the good sense
and the fair-mindedness of the American people as a whole
are so pronounced that the vicious outpourings of insin-
cerity, of ignorance, and of vindictiveness of a gutter sheet,
will avail little in the long run.
Instead of eternally combatting enemies of this type,
let us Jews, conscious of the fact that as a priest people,
we have a work to do, take up that work with zeal and
with enthusiasm and become the instruments to lead the
peoples of the earth on and up to the heights of righteous-
ness and truth and brotherhood.
In some sense, we should recognize ourselves to be the
instruments of God in establishing justice in the earth and
in bringing nearer the day of fulfillment of the prophet's
vision of a world without war or discord among men. The
year will be a happy one for Israel and for humanity just
in proportion as the Jew recognizes his present duty and
his present opportunity. In this spirit, I repeat for the
readers of the Chronicle and for all our friends the time
honored greetings: "L'Shono tovo tikkosevu."

Hours. 8.30-8:3 0

By RABBI A. M. HERSHMAN

Jewish Misery—as Max Nordau puts it—has two
forms, the material and the moral, the physical and the
spiritual. There is the problem of the Jewish people, its
survival and revival; there is the problem of Judaism, its
maintenance and furtherance. The year just ending
will not pass into history as having contributed anything
towards the solution of either problem. Nobody casting
his eyes back upon the year 5681 will find much satisfac-
tion in the retrospect. Little has stirred; nothing has
changed. The misery of our people remains unrelieved.
Most of the Jewries of the world are convulsed with trials
and sufferings unparalleled in the long-drawn annals of
Israel. Neither has there been any appreciable alteration
in our spiritual condition. The much-heralded and long-
looked for "revival" is slow in coming.
The year 5682 opens in pervading gloom. Yet Rosh
Hashona's message is one of hope and comfort. "Behold,
He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep."
The night will pass away, the dawn will arise.
But if this hope is to be fulfilled, we must bestir our-
selves and contribute our full share towards the solution
of the problems that loom so large on our Jewish Horizon.
"He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep."
But neither must Israel slumber or sleep. Rosh Hashona
sounds the trumpet-call to our Jewish conscience and con-
sciousness, the trumpet-call to an awakened sense of duty
and responsibility, of self-help and reliance on Him who
has never forsaken His people. It sounds a bugle-call to
American Israel. The eyes of Israel the world over turn
to us for succor and relief, and for the realization of our
age-long hope. The cry of our flesh and blood should
evoke a more generous response than it has evoked in the
year just drawing to a close. We must not allow the well
of charity to run dry. Nor must we neglect the unique
opportunity afforded us for constructive, creative work.
Palestine the Land of Israel's Promise is calling us. We
must respond to its call. Let every Jew do his part to,
hasten his people's redemption by more strenuous and self-
denying effort to fulfil the tasks which it offers to him.
