DETROIT

The most radical reductions in mo-1
for car prices in the history of the
automobile industry became effective
this week upon all models of Willys-
Knight and Overland cars, according
to an announcement issued over the
sigature of John N. Willys. The state-
ment of price change came as the
feature of the announcement of the
Willys-Knight and new series Over-
land.
The new price of the Overland
touring car with electric starter,
lights and demountable rims is $595.
One year ago this car sold for $1,035.
The Overland sedan that sold for
$1,675 is to be sold for $895. The
new prices represent a reduction of ,
approximately 43 per cent in one
year. The 1916 Overland sold for
$665, a price that was thought could
never be bettered.
The Willys-Knight touring car,
selling at $2,300 last year, is now
listed at $1,525. This is a reduction
of approximately 31 per cent.
The unheralded announcement by
Willys brings the prices of Overland
and Willys-Knight cars lower than
ever before. The reductions were
made possible, according to the state-
ment, through remarkable economics
in manufacturing methods which
• have been in process of installation
' in the great Toledo plants over a
period of 18 months.
An equally important factor in the
price reductions are new raw ma-
' terial purchasing contracts which re-
fleet greatly reduced raw material
costa. In this connection it is stated
that already the Willys-Overland
Company has used 85 per cent of
non-current steel on hand at the be-
ginning of the year.
' The Willys-Overland Company has
sold automobiles in the past year, ac-
cording to retail reports just corn-
. piled, to a total value of $65,000,000.
In the announcement Willys
"We have cut prices to the bone, vol-
ume production at last has freed as
from the shackles of war priced ma-
' terials. The public now gets the bene-
fit of great manufacturing efficiency,
low costs and the olwest prices in our
history."
The Overland Model 4 touring car
was first offered the public in 1919,
when it sold at $845. The price
went to $1,035 last year, owing to
I high material costs, but was reduced
later to $895 and the first five months
' of increased business of t'iis year per-
mitted a further reduction to $695.
The new prices and those of a year
1 ago follow: Overland chassis $485,
E formerly $885; touring $595, former-
ly $1,035; roadster $595, formerly
1$1,035; coupe $850, formerly $1,525;
sedan $895, formerly $1,675. Willys-
i Knight roadster $1,475, formerly $2,-
1300; touring $1,525, formerly $2,-
300; coupe $2,195, formerly $2,950;
sedan $2,395, formerly $3,050; chas-
sis $1,975. All prices are given as
f. o. b. Toledo.

CUNARD LINE RESUMES
LARGE SHIP BUILDING

The Cunard Line takes pleasure in
announcing the resumption of its
large post war ship building program
which was temporarily held up owing
to labor dispute and the recent long
drawn out Joiners' Strike in Great
Britain. Work has been resumed on
the "Laconia," Samaria," Ausonia"
and "Tyrrhenia." The "Laconia" and
"Samaria," which have a gross ton-
nage of 20,000 tons are sister ships
I of the "Scythia" which recently •r-
rived on her maiden trip in New York.
The "Tyrrhenia," though of some-
; what less tonnage, is in the same class
as the "Scythia," "Samaria" and
"Laconia." It is estimated that the
,"Laconia," "Samaria" and "Tyrrhe-
nia" will be completed by the end of
March, the "Andania" by the end of
April and the "Ausonia" by the end
of June.
All the ships now being built for the
Cunard Line will burn oil fuel. The
recently announced plans to convert
the "Berengaria" (ex-"Imperator")
to an oil-burner will give the Cunard
Line an oil-burning fleet of great ex-

press steamers for the Channel Ports

service, beginning next March, when
the "Mauretania" will also re-enter
service as an oil-burner. The "Ber-
engaria" will become the largest oil-
burner afloat.

Why They Choose the Paige

Since the first of the year more than 25 per cent of our
sales have replaced cars of much higher price.

Buying habits have changed. Men who can afford five
and six thousand dollar cars have developed a canny
shrewdness. They have learned that peak price no
longer guarantees peak performance or maximum value.

This conviction is brought home to them when they
compare the Paige with the cars that carry the biggest
price tags. Power, endurance, comfort, beauty and
economy —in any and every test the Paige 6.66 is
triumphant. That is why discriminating buyers are
choosing the Master of the Highway as the greatest
value on the market today.
