The New Year finds the world situation with reference
to the restoration of the Holy Land in a critical but hope-
ful condition. The last year has been full of storms but
the atmosphere is clearing.
The British government has re-asserted its intention of
facilitating the re-establishment of the Jewish people in
Palestine. Radicals, both Jews and non-Jews, have been
the cause of riots in Palestine and the disorderly elements
are being suppressed. An Arab delegation to England sent
to request the abrogation of the Balfour Declaration has
received no encouragement. Both Arabs and Jews are
coming to a realization that by their co-operation Palestine
can be made prosperous.
The difference in point of view of Jews who are denied
civil rights in numerous European countries and those who
enjoy all rights of citizens in their countries in which they
reside has brought a serious clash into American Zionism.
A way will be found to protect the interest and self-
respect of European Jews and at the same time to enlist
the support and aid of American Jews in the upbuilding
of Palestine. While theories are important and funda-
mental, it is quite possible for persons to co=operate in the
same ultimate object for divers reasons and from different
standpoints. It is a great pity that the parties to the con-
troversy could not appreciate this psychology of their op-
ponents.
The coming year will define the work of the various
elements in Jewry in the re-establishment of Palestine as
the Jewish Homeland and many persons will work for this
because of their keen sense of identity with the Jewish
people and their intense interest in the restoration of a
Jewish nation. Many others will work for the re-establish-
ment of Palestine as a place where Jewish people who now
live abnormal, hampered lives can live fully, naturally and
expressively.
There is not now and there never has been any occasion
to believe that the restoration of the Jewish people will in
the slightest degree interfere with the constitutional rights
of Jewish people in the countries in which there is any
respect for constitution.
The hour demands sacrifice, contribution and devotion.
It is to be hoped that the New Year will see no more ex-
pressions from comfortable, smug and wealthy Jews who
have everything that they wish in the world and therefore
believe that the Jewish problem is solved and will not take
cognizance of the bitter misery of millions of Jews who
seek to save that which they hold more dear and for which
countless generations have suffered unuttered martyrdom.
