There are sometimes questions asked. Will the Order of B'nai B'rith be prominent? Will it disap- pear like all the rest of the Jewish - organizations which have started within the last 75 years and lived and flourished for sometime, then went out of existence? I can only reply to these thoughts in one way. For the last 5,000 years great organizations of government existed, Egypt, Syria, Babylon, Greece and Rome. They made a great stir while they lasted they even flourished for sometime. Today they are mere shadows and a dream. The reason why they perished was be- cause they had no mission which would benefit humanity, and when their materialism came to an end they disappeared with it. While the above nations made every effort to injure Judaism, they themselves were destroyed and Juda- ism has flourished more than ever be- fore. The reason is that, Judaism has one mission to perform which an- nounces to the whole world in open daylight One God, One Humanity, ustice, Social and Righteousness to ill. The B'nai li'rith has a mission smelly to perform for Judaism. The vim and ideals is to unite Judaism as whole into one compact body. They lo not realize any dogmatic interpre- tations They do not distinguish be- tween a Keren Hayesod or an Ameri- can Zionist It makes no difference whether a man belongs to the con- servative or liberal type All they ask when one applies to the order is to be a Good Jew and a Good Ameri- can. They do not recognize any social distinction. It makes no difference whether a man is a millionaire or a poor laborer who earns his living "hy the sweat of his brow." Ile is equal to any other man in the Order. It is' every Jews duty to affiliate with the Order and to become an active member of the organization. I trust that this message at this time of the year, when every Jew con- sults his conscience whether he is do- ing his full duty to Judaism, will take it to heart and ask himself the ....• question, whether he is right by not having joined the Order up to the present time and affiliated with the noblest and most ideal organization in the history of Judaism. I take this opportunity of wishing each and every brother of the Pisgah Lodge of the Order of B'nai B'rith a Happy and Prosperous New Year, .741 1' rr / Of course 1/45As-K-Ay undleS.: they offer the syses4 choice tn.-• (CanNes 1111 15 for those who discriminate ' Phone Main 1566 1418 Woodward Ave. i . -- ..-,,--ers_r_sr_ms_c_eee....,, .3.00%..---. . -1•,-- re>•digla§ac goseberry PHILOMATHIC CLUB Milliner I A Review of the Activities of De. troit's Popular Debating Circle. 4258 Woodward Ave. _ - ...... ll The Strand .,-- ,_-__ .................. ___ . Throughout the 22 years of its exis- tence it has followed steadily that ideal implied in its name. The Philo- mathic Club has a purpose for its existence, and it is the purpose that caused the birth of the organization, was responsible for its prosperous ermlition and which has continued to he its protection against adversities. The purpose of the Philomathic Club is to prepare its young men for the battle of life, to be a credit to themselves, to the Jewish race and to the nation of which they are a part. With this in mind, a representative group of the young manhood of the Jewish people, finding the doors of high school societies closed to them, formed an organization based on "love of learning,"—the Philomathic De- puting Club. From its humble beginning 22 years ago, the Philomathic Debating Club has outgrown even the optimistic ex- pectations of its founders, until today It is recognized as one of the largest debating organizations in the state numbering hundreds of names on the alumni roll. The Philomathic has widened the scope of its activities to include an nual model meetings, oratorical con- tests and other events by which the Jewish community could judge the work of the organization. The ban- quets held annuallly give the mem- bers an opportunity to become ac- quainted with the alumni, who on this occasion attend en masse for sake of reunion with their old friends and for the sake of talking over old times. The policy of holding debates with other organizations has added prestige to the Philomathic. The organiza- tion has gradually stepped out of the rank of a high school debating society into that of a college organization holding even more than their own in debates with college clubs. Nor has the Philomathic overlooked its greater duties to the Jewish Kople and America. In the many activities which arose as a result of the world crisis, the Philomathic has not been found wanting. A large number en- listed. In Jewish War Relict', Pales- tine Restoration Fund and the Lib- erty 1,-an Drives,—in none of these has the Philomathic shirked its duty. Membership in the I'hilomathic en- tails many duties and responsibilities. To carry out the purpose and ideal of the organization, active young men are needed. The serious and earnest young man will find it a distinction to belong to the Philomathic. JR. Y. P. S.
