SAM HUME

The six weeks' drama season which
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra So-
ciety is putting on at Orchestra Ilall
under the direction of Sam Ilume is
an experiment which will be watched
with 'great interest by sympathizer,
with the permanent community the-
ater movement.
The aim of the group of public-
spirited men and women who are fos-
tering this project is to provide an
artistic place for Detroit theater
lovers where the best classical and':
modern plays may be produced in the
most artistic manner, enhanced at
times by music played by an orches-
tra of 86 men led by Ossip Gabrilo-
witch, master conductor and pianist,
and one that ranks as one of the
finest in the coutry. The work of
Sam Hume as an actor and producer
is known to thousands of Detroiters.
Four sparkling comedies and two
finely contrasted tragedies will be
given under the personal direction of
51r. Hume and a cast of able per-
formers.
Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of
Being Earnest;" Bernard Shaw's
"Pygmalion;" Eugene O'Neill's "Be-
yond the Horizon;" Shakespeare's
"Merry Wives of Windsor," with
Verdi and Nicolai music; "A Midsum-
mer Night's Dream," with the Men-
delssohn music, and Maurice Maeter-
linck's "l'elleas and Melisande," with
Gabriel Faure musical score, are the
plays that will be produced.
The price scale for this series of
performances is remarkably low,
ranging from 17 to 84 cents for buy-
ers of season tickets fur the six dif-
ferent plays, and at prices ranging
from 25 cents to $1 a performance
otherwise. The advance sale reports
speak for good audiences.
Subscription performances will be
