ant Jewish altruistic, philanthropic
and patriotic organizations. So at
odd moments I have talked to promi-
nent Jews in the various professions,
in business and in the altruistic, phi-
lanthropic and patriotic fields. And
at this little home meeting I succeed-
ed in getting some very direct, frank
statements of opinion concerning the
whole question of combating anti-
Semitic feeling.
Should Not Be On Defense.
At this informal conference I ex-
pressed certain views which I wish to
record briefly here.
To begin with, I said I thought it
questionable strategy for the Jew
constantly to assume the defensive.
In the eyes of the law a man accused
is innocent until proved guilty. In
the court of public opinion the ac-
cused is usually held guilty until
proved innocent.
When the American Jewish Com-
mittee issued "The 'Protocols,' Bol-
shevism and the Jews," it did a char-
acteristically fine thing but that par-
ticular work was basically defensive,
fundamentally negative. I most sin-
cerely hope the committee will see its
way clear to engage in educational
work of equally positive character. I
mean by that, that it should net about
deliberately, adroitly aggressive, to
create in this country an adequate,
sympathetic, intelligent public under-
standing of the Jew, his contribution
to American public life, education
and art.
Secondly, I urged that the Jew
drop the cry of "persecution." Re-
gardless of whether it is true that the
Jew is persecuted in this country, the
plea of "petsecution" is one that has
been worn out. Its strength is gone.
Besides, the Jew is resourceful. He
can approach his problem from a new
angle.
Quotes Lincoln.
Thirdly, I expressed the opinion
that Jewish organization of altruistic,
philanthropic and patriotic character
must formulate policies which will
enable the public to become thorough-
ly acquainted with those organize-
tions, their personnel, their traditions,
