When all the world has steeped in sin,
The Ilebrews braved the nations'
wrath
And nobly followed still the guide
That led them on in virtue's path.

That beacon is the Decalogue,
Proclaimed from Sinai's flaming
height,
And burning, as each age rolls by,
' With purer, grander, holier light.

Oh glorious flame! Thy sparkling
beams
With radiant splendor shine today;
Nor time, nor change, nor tyrant's
power
Can quench or dim one holy ray.

Oh, heavenly lamp! Thy light shall
shine
Till gin and hate from earth de-
part;
Till wrong shall fail and right pre-

And justice rule the human heart.

A Story About Reb Heschele.

By Judith Ish•Kishor.

told you, a few weeks ago, one
joke about Reb Heschele, the great
Rabbi who was such a mischievous
little boy when he was young. Well,
here is another story about the
youngster.
Once on a very rainy day Heschele
was unhappy. Ile didn't know why,
but, like many of us, he felt that a
rainy day was a good excuse for be-
ing miserable
"I want a whole herring, mamma,"
he wept at breakfast.
"What!" said his mother;" why
should a little boy like you want a
whole herring? But go and say your
morning prayers, Zuninkeh (little
son), like a good Jew, and then I will
give you a whole herring."
"I want to see the herring," He-
schele sniffled. Then his mother laid
on a plate the head and tail of a
herring, placed together no that you
couldn't see where they joined. He-
schele looked at it and stopped cry-
ing.
Is that a whole herring?" he asked
uncertainly.
"Don't you see?" said his mother.
"Here's the head and here's the tail."
Heschele dried his eyes on his sleeve
(a thing I don't want any reader of
"The Sabbath Angel to do, as it is
most unsanitary) and went into a
corner and "davened" (prayed). In
exactly a minute he was through and
came back to the table.
"Now give me my herring, moth-
er," he said cheerfully.
"But—what—surely you couldn't
have finished the whole 'davenen' an
quickly!" she cried.
"Yes, I did, mother," said the fu-
ture Rabbi-in-Israel. "If the head
and the tail of the herring make the
whole herring, then 'Mah Tohvu' and
'Oleynu' make the whole 'davenen!'"
("Mah Tohvu" and "Oleynu" are the
first and last prayers of the Morning
Service.)
