At a conference of Jewish students at Cracow an organization of
students was founded to protect the interests of the Jewish youth in Poland.

On June 15 a conference will take place in Warsaw of representatives
of all schools in Poland where Yiddish is the language of instruction.

In connection with the expulsion of aliens from Warsaw, they have
been prohibited from settling at Lodz and in 11 other towns in the neigh-
borhood.

The garrison of Sobolefi organized a pogrom in the townlet. Many
Jewish houses and businesses were plundered and a large number of Jews
were cruelly beaten.

The Jewish institutions at Warsaw sent a petition to President Harding
not to apply the immigration restrictions in the United States to the Ukrain-
ian refugees. • • • •

An important collection of books is to go to the Jewish National Library
of Jerusalem under the will of Popper Lynkeus, a noted Austrian writer,
who died recently.

The next Zionist Congress will be held in Carlsbad on September 6 of
this year. The meeting of the Greater Actions Committe will be held on
June 22 in Prague.

Jewish militia companies of 500 men each have been organized near
Kieft for the purpose of preventing massacres. The commanders of the
companies are mostly non Jews.

The newly formed United Jewish Orthodox Community of San Fran-
cisco, Calif., is to erect and maintain a Jewish center to house orthodox
Jewish activities along religious, educational, social and recreational lines.

The eighty-third annual meeting of the Ilebrew Sunday School Associa-
tion and the seventy-third annual meeting of the Hebrew Education So-
ciety of Philadelphia, were held simultaneously.

The steamer "Corniolo," carrying 1,000 Jewish immigrants en route to
Jaffa has been forced to remain at Trieste owing to the bar on immigration
, into Palestine.

At the Lodz railway station soldiers attacked the Jewish passengers
recently. Many Jews lost their beards. Similar attacks occurred at War-
saw. The Jewish deputies have made representations on the subject to
the ministry.

Announcement has been made that on June 1 Dr. Ilenry Slonimsky, of
the Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, will become superintendent of
the Jewish Settlement of Cincinnati. The position has been vacant for
almost two years.

Sir Herbert Samuel recently opened the first exhibition of Palestine art i
in Jerusalem. The exhibition, which is arranged by the Pro-Jerusalem
Society, is shown in the Tower of David and has a special room with
exhibits by Jewish artists.

The Polish Assimilationist party petitioned the premier to guard the
interests of those Jews who support only the equality of all citizens, but
who do not favor minority rights or any other schemes tending to isolation
from their Polish neighbors.


At a Zeire Zion massmeeting in Warsaw, a resolution was adopted con-
demning the French for their anti-British and anti-Jewish propaganda in
Palestine, which, it was said, was responsible for the agitation among the.
Arabs that resulted in the recent disturbances.

The Jewish National Council petitioned the Polish government to revise I
the clause in the Russian-Polish treaty granting Polish citizenship in the
annexed districts only to Russians entered in the Polish registers. The,
council pleaded in favor of naturalizing all residents in the annexed districts.

A dispatch from Cairo states that 158 Jewish immigrants who had
arrived there en route to Palestine will be returned to Constantinople pend- '
ing a removal of the immigration bar recently set up by the British Admin-1
istration in Palestine.

Professor Petratzki, of the Warsaw University, has resigned from they,
faculty because the board of trustees refused to accept Professor Ashkenazi
on the teaching staff. Professor Ashkenazi is a Jew who is now representing
Poland at the League of Nations Assembly.

At Alexandria, La., a new public school building in Monroe street is to
be named the "Rosenthal School," complimentary to the Hon. James Rosen-
thal, who was for 27 years president of the Rapider l'arish School Board,
and director of the board for seven years previous to his becoming president.

General Petlura, whose troops were responsible for a number of pog-
roms in the Ukraine, has issued an order condemning the Bolshevik troupe
for attacking the Jews. He invited the Poale-Zionists and the Jewish Peo-
ple's l'arty to send representatives to join his National Ukrainian govern-
ment.

On the last day Passover, in response to an appeal by Rabbi Simon
Glazer, over half the amount neceE.sary for a new building was subscribed
for the Shearith Israel Talmud Torah of Kansas City. The new building,
which will be built on a site adjoining the Shearith Israel Synagogue, will
provide accommodations for 400 children.



Congregation Rodef Shalom, the leading reform congregation of Pitta-
burgh, Pa., has re-elected Rabbi Samuel II. Goldenson for a term of years
and increased his salary to $16,000 per annum. In addition, it is setting
aside a sum of $4,000 each year to provide life insurance for Rabbi
Goldenson.

Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf was among the party which met Dennis Cardi-;
nal Dougherty upon his arrival in Philadelphia and acted as his escort',
from the station to lb. cathedral. Dr. Krauskopf was also one of the special
guests invited by the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus to the dinner
held Monday evening last at the Bellevue-Stratford.

An official declaration by the White Russian government of the inde-
pendence of White Russia as a White Russian Jewish State was published
last week by the Revel People's Daily, says a dispatch from Renal. The
sovereignty of both the White Russian and Jewish Nationalities is to be
recognized, the declaration says.

As the result of a meeting held recently in North London under the.
chairmanship of the lion. Lily II. Montagu and addressed by Rabbi I. I.
Mattock and Mr. C. G. 5Iontefiore, a committee has been formed for the
purpose of establishing a Liberal Jewish congregation in North London. I

lege, London.

The executive board of the United Jewish Charities of Hartford, Conn.,
has created a scholarship fund to assist boys and girls to continue their
education where they are unable to do so on account of lack of money.
All worthy rases will be investigated and assistance will be given for higher
education as well as elementary. It is expected that a numbr of people
will contribute specially to this fund. •

The annual meeting of the Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden was held,
last month. Dr. James Simon presided. During the war the society con-
tributed 7,000,000 marks towards the care of the Eastern refugees. It had
also done much to relieve the starving Jewish children in Austria and'
given valuable assistance to the relief bureaus for Jewish workmen and •
the aid societies for emigrants. That expenditure had amounted to 835,000'
marks.

In a letter to the London times, Israel Zangwill warns Great Britain
that unless its intention of establishing a Jewish national homeland in
Palestine for the Jews is firmly impressed on the Arab as irrevocable, there
will be no peace in the country, and Palestine will become a "second Egypt
to England and another ancient Egypt to the Jews." Mr. Zangwill holds
the present scheme, as outlined in the recently published mandate, politically
and economically unworkable. • • • •
Recently Dr. Poznanski, who up to now was a preacher in Warsaw,
was elected to the office of rabbi. This appointment has deeply stirred the
orthodox wing of the community, and their ire was increased by the addi-i
tional appointment of Rabbi Halpern, hitherto rabbi in Lodz and member
of the l'olish Parliament. If the appointments are confirmed, the orthodox
section of the community proposes to request the government to grant it
• permission to set up • special orthodox community on the model of the
I separatist communities in Germany.
