God said: "I will make a poet,"
And a soul was sent below

With the sufferer's weight of woe.
God laid on the eyes of the poet's

An Endowed Press
And in speaking of "Unity," we arc minded to say a wool about
the religious press in general and notably about the so-called Jewish
press. It is no secret to anyone familiar with the situation that of
the scores of Jewish papers, so-called, published in this country,
only a handful deserve the recognition which their title implies. 1:titty
of them are little more than advertising bulletins. 'they contain
neither Jewish news our editorials of value or suggestiveness. They
are published in many instances by persons in the printing business
as a means to keep their presses running in dull times. A few of our
Jewish newspapers of the better sort having been established ft tr
many years have fairly adequate facilities fun- news gathering and,
moreover, stand for a well-defined editorial policy.
But even these papers would be very much improved did they
have at their backs an adequate endowment fund, so that they would
not have to depend 'Weil by week and month by month upon their
advertising patrons and subscribers to keep them going. What we
Jews need in this country is a virile, fearless, conscientiiitt , ly - eilited
newspaper or magazine so well financed that whether the general
business is good or bad, it shall go forward the unflinching advocate
of Jewish idealism and the true mirror of Jewish life.
This will be accomplished. we believe, in one of two way s :
either by the creation of some adequate endowment fund for the sup-
port of a Jewish periodical or by the joining tuigetliter under one
management of a considerable number of newspapers published in
various parts of the country whose news-gathering facilities might
thus be enhanced and wh o se editorials might lie syndicated among
them. In this way, we believe the best literary brains available
Might be brought to the service of the Jewish press, and instead of
dozens or scores of irresponsible organs in which the Jew is as often
Misrepresented as not. we would have a few great newspapers de-
voted to the cause of Jew and Judaism that should be worthy of the
name. The time cannot he distant when this matter shall be given
serious consideration. Who will start a movement in that direction?
