Why Break the Silence?

Patience is not always a virtue. Silence is not always golden. We
had determined weeks ago, and had announced our purpose in that
regard, to make no reference in our pulpit to the campaign of Anti-
Semitism that affecting the Jewry of the world, has found one of its
Main springs in our own beloved city. And, frankly, we had determined
that except in cases of extreme provocation, these editorial columns
should be free from any reference to the matter.
But there are times when silence is cowardly' and non-resistance a
denial of manhood. It is all very well for sone of our friends to hold
that the statement issued through the public press this week and re-
printed in another part of this paper should not have been made, and
for them to claim that such a pronouncement—true, as they admit, in
every word and justified beyond a doubt—will only serve to feed the
Anti-Semites' hunger for publicity.

But let them think of this. So long as the organ of Jew hatred pub-
lished in this city limited itself to its stupid accusations that the Jews
were seeking world domination or so long as it confined its Mud - slinging
to men well able to defend themselves, if they saw fit to do so, we found
no fault with those who held that the outpourings of wrath and of
venom against the Jews might be treated with that silent contempt that
undoubtedly they deserved. Nay, so long even as the writer of these
articles, hiding, under the veil of anonymity and protected by his master,
accused us of 'a lack of patriotic loyalty, we felt that we could afford
to permit the Jews' record of American citizenship and of patriotic
loyalty to stand as sufficient answer to the vile charge.

Rabbi Fox Speaks Out

Rabbi George Fox, editor of the Jewish Monitor, of Fort Worth,
Texas, never hesitates to say, and to say with emphasis, what he be-
lieves. All doubt, if any there had been as to this, would have been
dissipated by a perusal of the last issue of his paper. In an article with
headlines reaching across the page, he calls upon the Executive Com-
mittee of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and of the
Central Conference of American Rabbis, though as a matter of fact the
latter organization has no authority in the matter, to at once take steps
to make Dr. Kaufman Kohler. the venerable president of the Hebrew
Union College, president emeritus of that institution and to put in his
stead some younger man who may take up aggressively the hard and
serious duties which such an office entails.
In making this suggestion, Dr. Fox would in no wise be conserved
as casting the slightest slur upon the greatest living Jewish scholar—
Dr. Kohler—but lie feels as do many more of Dr. Kohler's pupils and
colleagues, not merely that he has well earned the right to be relieved
from the wearing details inevitably connected with the presidency of
a great institution, but what is of infinitely greater importance, he should
have the leisure to devote his very great scholarly abilities to the setting
down in permanent form of the results of his lifelong reszarches in
those fields of Jewish literature of which he is singularly and uniquely
the master.

One cannot but agree with De Fox that the authorities of the college
would be doing a real service to the Jewry of the world if they would
make it possible for this great scholar thus to devote himself to purely
literary activities. But at the same time, one must wonder at the
temerity of Dr. Fox in addressing himself as he has to the men who
have not only the welfare of the college but of Jewry at large at heart.
Surely these men are not blind to the great service that Dr. Kohler could
render to our cause with greater leisure at his disposal, and it scarcely
seems possible that they would require at the hands of any single grad-
uate of the college a reminder of their duty in the premises
But even more are we surprised that Dr. Fox should be bold enough
while Dr. Kohler remains president of the college to suggest the name
of any man as a successor to him. We are frank in saying that in our
opinion, our colleague in the south, for whom we have the greatest
respect, has in this matter stepped beyond the bounds of good judgment
and of goOd taste. His action can be indulged only on the ground of
his great enthusiasm for the cause and his undoubted desire to serve
Judaism in the best possible way.

Arthur Balfour is a smooth statesman—one of the smoothest that
England ever produced. The Zionists, now that the British mandate
has been agreed upon for Palestine, realize that their interpretation
of the famous Balfour Declaration was as unreliable as the average
man's interpretation of certain passages in the Bible. They have
now awakened to the fact that Balfour really meant what he said
and what has been read into his declaration—namely, a Homeland,
and not a Jewish State.

In other words, Balfour meant what he said and the Zionist Jews
thought he meant more than he said. So now the London Zionists
are bitterly disappointed. And the London "Times" seems disap.
pointed, too, that the Jews have failed to get what they expected.
At any rate, Palestine can be used for colonization purposes and
developed into a haven for the persecuted of Europe.
O
Usually stories based on the subject of intermarriage are inane.
But in a recent issue of the "Saturday Evening Post" there is a
splendid story dealing with the question and it is well worth reading.
After all is said and done, one can no more escape marrying the
other's family than one can escape mingling with other humans and
recognizing certain obligations and duties. Intermarriage between
orphans living alone on a desert island would be a complete success—
possibly.
0
-
My, my, but persons are brave by running away from a problem
instead of standing their ground and meeting it squarely. Children
are the greatest problem that intermarriage brings, and we have pt
to see that problem properly solved.

Gilbert K. Chesterton probably requires additional pitchers of
water on his lecture platforms just now to prevent him from chok-
ing when he notes the additional honors that have been heaped upon
Lord Reading. If any man ever hated, deliberately and maliciously
hated to see any other man gain eminence, it is Chesterton, who has
tried in every contemptible way to hurt Reading.

I like that subject of Chesterton's that he has selected for his
lectures—it's no thoroughly appropriate—"The Ignorance of the
Educated." He has proven it.

Arthur Brisbane's attempt to show that Jews care a great deal
for other things besides money by reciting an incident in the life of
the late Revolutionary Prince Kropotkin was not a happy one. He
spoke of Kropotkin desiring to transport radical literature and he
engaged two Polish Jews for the job, promising them a liberal
reward if they got through with the intellectual dynamite. They
delivered the goods to the Prince and refused to take a cent except
the price of a return ticket.

I think the brilliant author of "To-Day" could probably have
chosen a better or happier incident to have proven his case. I derit
think a diagram is necessary.

"Hungry Hearts," by Anzia Yezierska, seems to be worth while.
I pass it along with the recommendation of the "Chicago Post":
"Exquisite vignettes of the dreams, the struggles, the disillusions of
an immigrant Russian Jewess. If you would gain a better appre-
ciation of the Russian Jewish soul, sensitive and complex yet strong
and simple withal, read 'Hungry Hearts 1 ."

Listen to Spargo—yes, John Spargo, the Socialist: "I come to
you this morning not to defend the Jews, either American Jews or
Jews in general. I would not insult you, my fellow-citizens, by
assuming for a moment that there was any need to defend the lop
ally and the sincerity of the Americanism of the Jews who inhibit
this country, and if perchance need for such defense existed, I
should be too humble to arrogate to myself the privilege and respon-
sibility of making that defense."

Careless and irresponsible writings, even though they come from
the pen of an author, often give our enemies a club with which to
beat us. So I am amazed that the editor of a New York Jewish
weekly should question the statement that all good citizens should
obey the law. Where on earth does he get the idea into his head
that only those laws that meet with individual approval should be
obeyed?

The Public Morals Board of the Methodist Episcopal Church is
aroused because Protestant clergymen are so often lampooned and
made to appear as effeminate fools on the stage and in the movies,
and demands that the Protestant clergyman receive as much con-
sideration in this regard as the Catholic priest.
®
It is regrettable that the th ought should obtain even among a
few that this may be due to the fact of Jewish prejudice against the
Christian religion, by reason of the fact that so much of the theat-
rical world is in control of Jews. But the Board disclaims .uch

theory.

0
The Jewish managers who are able to correct the situation should
do so; though non-Jews, both authors and producers, are probably
as thoughtlessly guilty in the same way. But just became Jews
be misunderstood should be an additional reason why nothing
