While in Cape Town, South Africa, last month, Chief Rabbi Hertz of
London delivered an address at the Alhambra Theatre. Mr. Justice Ben-
jamin, the newly elected Judge of the Supreme Court, presided.





The Lord Mayor presided at a meeting held at the Princess Road Syna-
gogue, Liverpool, Eng., last month. The meeting was called to protest
against the misrepresentation of the Jewish community in certain quarters.





Jewish students in Switzerland have placed a memorandum before the
Assembly calling upon the League of Nations to afford the Jews of Hungary
protection, citing incidents to show the persecution to which they are exposed.

Solotnon L. Auerbach, 88 years old, for many years connected with the
city government of Baltimore, Md., died last month at the home of his
daughter in Brooklyn. For fifty years Ile was secretary of the Hebrew Free
Burial Society.

The Anshe Ewes Congregation, Chicago, Ill., has extended a unanimous
call to Rabbi Philip Langh, who for the past few months has represented
the United Synagogue in Chicago and vicinity. The congregation is the
oldest conservative congregation in Chicago.

The talent for music in the Elman family is pot confined solely to Mischa,
ithe famous violinist, for his sister Minna possesses a voice of great beauty
and power. Minna Elman, who is a protege of Mole. Tctrazzini, will make
her public debut on February 4 in this city.

In the Criminal Court of Appeals in London, on December 1, Lord
Reading severely rebuked Sir Ernest Fild, the Crown Councillor, who referred
to a defendant as a "Jewish money lender." Spectators who crowded the
courtroom rose and applauded Lord Readings' criticism.

VIENNA.—Anita Muller, the well-known Jewish public worker, has
just completed a volume devoted to the Jewish children of Eastern Europe
with special and honorable mention of Jewish orphans. The book is through-
out illustrated by sonic famous artists.

Herzl-Moser Hospital, Leeds, Eng., is to be extended, and for this pur-
pose the adjoining house had been purchased. The hospital was founded by
Mr. Jacob Moser of Bradford fifteen years ago. For the first few years of
its existence Mr. Moser provided the greater part of the money necessary for
the upkeep.

At a recent meeting of the progress Club of Johnstown, Pa., initial steps
were taken to erect a Jewish Reformed temple as a fitting tribute to the
memory of the late Morris Nathan, one of Johnstown's most beloved citi-
zens. Already $25,000 has been pledged and the remaining $25,000 necessary
is expected to be raised in the neat. ..future,

The free Talmud Torah system recently organized in Kansas City, Mo.,
under the auspices of the United Synagogues of Greater Kansas City now
has five schools under its jurisdiction with a daily attendance of over 500
pupils. Just as quickly as competent teachers can be obtained additional
schools will be opened in the sections where no Talmud Torahs exist.

Edwin Samuel, the oldest son of Sir Herbert Samuel, received the title
of "Sheik of Baar-Sheva," which was conferred upon him by Arabian sheiks
on the occasion of the latter's wedding ceremony. Mr. Samuel was recently
married to Hadassah Grazovsky, the (laughter of the Hebrew author and
I*ales;ine's pioneer settlers.

NEW YORK.—Dr. Harry I'lotz is sailing this Wednesday for Europe,
where he will supervise a medical unit of 20 specialists in the relief of
Eastern Europe. The unit, which is being sent by the Joint Distribution
Committee, will sail about January 15 and will remain abroad 12 months.
For its maintenance the J. D. C. has made an appropriation of $2,000,000.

Raphael Weill, part owner of one of the largest San Francisco depart-
ment stores, is dead in Paris, where he made his home for some years. Mr.
Weill, who was 83 years old, came to America from l'aris in 1854 and in
1908 received the Legion of Honor decoration. He was well known as a
philanthropist. In 1906 he announced that he had imposed a bachelor tax
on himself by supplying 5,000 prr zoin S en ,a 4. -ith complete wardrobes.

Abraham Schaffner, who was one of the leading reform Jews of Mt.
Vernon, N. Y., passed away on the 7th inst. Mr. Schaffner, who was a
member of the firm of Hart, Schaffner & Marx of Chicago, had made Mt.
Vernon his home for the last quarter of a century. He was one of the or-
ganizers and for five years president of Sinai, Temple, and a founder and
director of the Young Men's Hebrew Association.

In memory of the late Stanley V. Mastbaum, of Philadelphia, a pioneer
in the artistic presentation of motion picutres, photoplay study and scenario
writing as a university course, will be inaugurated at Temple University,
Philadelphia, Pa., with the beginning of the New Year. A department at

Paris "Alliance Israelite Universelle," was opened here. It is an important

WARSAW.—A new Jewish weekly named "The Emigrant" began pub-
lication here, with the object of finding for its readers necessary information
concerning emigration to America, matters of shipping accommodations,
prices, new laws and matters of vises. All Polish Jews are either emigrants
or prospective emigrants and the fact that new questions constantly arise
under the emigration laws of Poland and immigration laws of America, the
newspaper bids fair to gain a large circulation.

DRESDEN.—Our Jewish Kehillah is much excited over a trial against a
band of robbers who have desecrated a Jewish synagoguge. The hand
specialized in thefts of pigs which were brought into the synagogue, killed
there and the carcass divided among the rogues. The Gentile "Shames" of
the congregation, who knew about it, would receive a share of the spoils
in return for his silence. This situation lasted a full year until the band
was caught and the matter made public.

CON STANT] NOPLE.—Gene Sral S ZyrnS rakaS kis, the commander of the Greek
forces in Thrace. has made public a proclamation in which he blames the Jess%
for some of the anti-Venizelos manifestations. The Jewish deputies at Salonika
as well as the Kehillah at Adrianople, protested to the government against the
commander's public statement and Premier Gounaris replied that he had tele-
graphically called for a copy Of the manifesto and assured them that the govern-
ment was aware of and appreciated the complete loyalty and patriotism , of the
Jewish community.

JERUSALEM.—Representatives a of Jewish technicians and engineers in
Palestine have presented to High Commissionef Herbert Samuel Wells
prepared plans concerning Palestinian construction. The High ConI t
sioner had a long talk with Engineers Hacker, Yellin and Becker concern-
ing the plans and noted the answers of the experts in his own private note -

highly offensive to any Jew who must pass the boundary lines and the
office in question. The general organization of German Jews addressed

ernment that no further flour will be furnished for Matzoth but Kehillas
will have to obtain the Matzoth themselves. Polish government controls
the entire Matzoth trade of the country. The government ii therefore in a
position to furnish the Jewish population with Matzoth prepared according
to the Jewish ritual. However, it seems that where there is a chance to do
