A Power In Community Fostering every Jewish activity undertaken in the city, the lodge hae proved a power in building up the present social and communal struc- ture. The Jewish Community Center. forint rly known as the l'rogress Ball, came into existence through 1Pnal Drab enterprise and almost from the very beginning the doors of this In- stitution under its former name were thrown open to all other Jewish or- ganizations. Intellectual advance. meat work of this lodge dates back to some eight years ago with a long recoil' of many successful and not- able events. The phenomenal growth of the bodge as a power in the community from Its small beginnings Is perhaps told best by Edward Lichtig. Stage Deputy of Bay City, and one of its or- ganizers. Writing in The Community Herald of Flint, Mr. Lichtig traces the progress of the lodge thus: History of Lodge "For many months, having been In- terested in matters D'nal B'rith In nearby cities, Brother A. 13. Roman anti myself in December, 1910, ar- rived in Flint to acquaint ourselves with conditions as to the numbers and prosperity of our coreligionists tied if found sufficient numbers to or- ganize a lodge of the I. 0. B. B. Our first call was upon Mr. Morris Ko- backer, who, after listening to our purpose, advised that we immediate. ly set out to accomplish our end. A form for the application to in- augurate a lodge was made out and Ilrother Kobacker was the first sign- er, and then took us to his Jewish friends until thirty had signed. With this properly filled out the matter was put into the hands of the Secre. Wry of the Grand Lodge. The appli- cation as-as rece14ed and pisorably acted upon and on Sunday, January 2, 1910, Flint Lodge No. 656 was in- stituted. Mr. Mandel Rosenberg was made its first President, while Mr. Morris Kobacker became its first Monitor. From the date of its birth to the present year Flint Lodge has had a healthy and continuous growth, the enthusiasm growing even in greater proportion than the membership. The Lodge became the center of all Jew- ish activity and thought, and each year the incoming officers net out as a purpose to outdo the efforts of the past years, so that the lodge as a home for Jewish thought and feeling continued to occupy a greater place in the affairs of Flint Jewry than anything heretofore attempted. It tried to make real the motto: "one for all, all for one." Nowhere has there been keener op-operation than that exhibited by Flint lodge, and the success of its activities is known thruout the entire state and Grand Lodge, out the entire state and by the Grand Lodge. At the outbreak of the War Flint Lodge covered itself with undying glory by Its contribution to war suf• ferers, the Red Crass, and all other worthy causes. Better than $7,000 being contributed In this way In ad. dition to taking care of its other at fairs. The main point to consider, however, Is the fact that twenty-two young men volunteered their services in behalf of our country. No finer mark of patriotism can be found any- where throughout our land than that shown by the Jewish men of Flint. During the time these affairs were developing Brother Kobacker was called to Toledo where he has since made his home. At first It was thought impossible to find another man to take u pthe month, of work left behind by Brother Kobacker, but in Brother lien Wiener such a man was found and through his efforts a great portion of the fill.TP81 ■ )! Bro.1 Wiener, not because fry has been sev.1 cral time elected President of the bodge, but because he has been in. torested In its success, has worked continuously for its welfare. To an i outsid e r "looking In" his efforts have been remarkable and the greatest compliment should be Paid him. As all well know Brother Wiener Is at the present time President of the Flint Lodge, working with all might for the success and advancement of not only Flint Lodge but also all things Jewish. In the past ten years Flint Lodge has grown from a me• herald') of thirty to 175, making It tl.e second largest lodge in the state." $530 ADDITIONAL IS PLEDGED BY PISGAH FOR RELIEF COUNCIL Annual Clearance Sale of Fine Furniture THE REDUCTIONS RANGE 20% to 33 1/3% now comes the opportunity of the season to purchase fine fitments for the home at a saving that is very real, very substantial and very genuine.
