Mr. Silverman, who is the father of Rabbi Joseph Silverman of Temple Emanto
El of this city, is hale and hearty. He has been a Mason and an Oildfellow for

Julius Strauss, a trustee of the Hebrew Orphan .1sylum and of the Jewish
Hospital of Brooklyn, died at his home in Manhattan last Friday night. Mr.
Strauss has been twice president of the Unity Club, the leading Jewish social
organization of Brooklyn.

the Joint Distribution Committee during the week of Chanukah in behalf of
European war and pogrom orphans. Announcement was made by the Bureau
that during the first day of Chanukah 50 sar orphans had been adopted.

WARSANV.—The local authorities at Lodz closed down the club of Jewish
journalists and authors in that city, according to a report received here. The
authorities claimed that the club was carrying on political activities against the
interests of the Polish government.

The residue is bequeathed to the widow with a stipulation that on her death it
shall be equally divided among the United Hebrew Charities, Educational Alli-
ance. the Young Men's Hebrew Association and the Hebrew Technical School
for Girls.



NEW YORK.—With the idea of showing New York Jews What
is being
done with the money they donate for local charities. the New York Federatjon
of Jewish Philanthropies is arranging to hold an exhibition at which will be
demonstrated the work and progress of the 91 institutions !wing maintained by

Dr. Cyrus Adler, of Philadelphia, acting chairman of the Jewish Welfare
Board, has accepted appointment by Secretary of %Vac linker as the representa-
tive of that organization on the War MemorialsCouncil to succeed the late

Lords in which he criticizes the Palestine Administration for causing expense and
inconvenience by the adoption of Hebrew as a third official language. The com-
