should be done not in a slipshod fashion but in the best manner pos-
sible. For that reason, we believe that every large congregation should
be organized for departmental work of an educational and social serv-
ice character with well trained specialists at the head of these depart-
ments. Nothing, we believe, would go further to put our religious
schools upon a firm basis of efficiency than to put at the head of them,
men and women trained as religious teachers and whose prime avo•
cation should be the teaching of religion. It is surely as necessary,
that we should have specialists in this department as in .any other
sphere of education. But today, most congregations are content
to allow the religious education of their children to be in the hands
of mere amateurs who themselves need training in even the funda-
mentals of religious knowledge.
And the same is true of the social service activities of the con-
gregation. No one man can be expert in many directions. One may
excel as a preacher or an organizer and vet be utterly unfitted to han-
dle the delicate situations which arise in the field of social service
Now insofar as these touch the field of religion at all, they should
be handled by experts who have been trained in the field of sociology
and of philanthrophy. We believe that a well organized congrega-
tion should have such a social service expert at the head of one of
its departments. It is when the congregation shall reach out in them
varied directions and in each of them do its work intelligenly and
conscientiously, that it will be really fulfilling a great function in
the community life. We look forward to th e time w h en h ere i n De..

these newer and better lines.
