SCHIFF'S PLEA TO JEWS

Philanthropic
Federation's Support
Urged in Letter to Business Men.

NEW YORK.—An appeal from Ja-
cob II. Schiff to the Jews of New
York, written shortly before his
death, was read at the first meeting
of the Business Nlen's Council of the
Federation for the Support of Jewish
Philantropic Societies. Mr. Schiff's
letter Addressed to the council's
chairman, Arthur Lehman, said:
"The Jewish community in its en-
tirety needs to have brought home to
it that year in and year out it has
the duty to provide in full for its
own philanthropic societies. It is
earnestly to be hoped that the plan
now proposed of organizing bodies of
volunteer ',corkers in every industry
to secure new members for the Fed-
eration may have its effect and in-
sure the raising of the large amount
necessary each year for the prosper-
ity of our philanthropic institutions."

New Relief Unit Sails for Europe.

NEW YORK.—Two clergymen of
this city in sermons yesterday took
Henry Ford to task for his opinions
about the Jews, recently published in
his magazine.
The Rev. Charles Francis McKoy,
pastor of the Greene Avenue Baptist
Church, Brooklyn, said Ilenry Ford
did not represent the Christian senti-
ment of America. "If he did I should
be heartily ashamed of my brethren,"
said Mr. McKoy.
The Rev. John Haynes Holmes at
the Community Church, Lyric Thea-
ter, said the Jews were among the
noblest of all the peoples of the world.
"Now, like a bolt front out of the
blue, conies the declaration of Mr.
Ford and his associates of hatred for
the Jew," said Mr. Holmes. "Hatred
is abroad in the world as never be-
fore," he added.
