among the people of Jeusalem for it
so vividly brought back the day of
the war and the taking of Jerusalem.
The British re-enacted the scenes of
the capture of the city, beginning
with a bombardment by artillery, the

advance of troops and the storming
of strongholds.

By ISAAC GOLDBERG
President, Temple Beth El

Standing on the threshold of a New Year, it is well to
spend a moment in contemplation of the year that has gone
before. A sorrowful year has it been for brethren in other
countries, laden with suffering and persecution. In our
own country the Jew has been made the target of nefarious
forces that would seek to undermine him.
Now, more than at any other period of his migratory
career, the Jew must stand united. The year 568l comes
to us laden alike with duties and with opportunities. May
we face the one fearlessly and may we rise to the other as
to a God-given purpose, through the fulfillment of which
salvation—physical as well as spiritual—shall be brought
to that society of which we are a part.
For all my friends I pray that the year 5681 may come
fraught with richest blessing. May they whose hearts have
been gladdened by the experience of the past, be actively
appreciative of the good that has fallen to their portion; and
to those whose burdens have been heavy, may they be
given strength to bear their sorrows with brave hearts.

A NEW YEAR S GREETING

By David W. Simons,

°resident Shaary Zedek Congregation.

It is with great pleasure that I extend a happy New Year
to the Jewish community of Detroit.

Although a vicious wave of anti-semitism has swept the
two hemispheres, still there is a promise that the clouds of
superstition and ignorance will be eclipsed by the sunlight
of intelligence. Let us ever bear in mind our brethren who
are still suffcring in Europe and resolve to ever be prepared
to come to their aid.

I desire to expreu my admiration for our brethren in this
country who are ever answering the never-ending appeals
for assistance from our brethren in the stricken countries.
This is something we can all be well proud of.
