In order to help complete the new home of the Hebrew Sheltering and
Immigrant Aid Society of America, the Arbeiter Ring at its last convention
decided to donate $111,000 to the home building fund. The treasurer of the
society now acknowledges the receipt of this amount and cites it as a noble
example which every Jew in America should emulate.




The Jewish students of the University of Berlin have organized a society
under the naive of - Itertiriah." The aim of this society is to assemble the
students twice during the week. The first meeting should be devoted to
Jewish history and the other to the tract of the week. The society is also
to arrange various entertainments for its members.




Our \Varsaw correspondent writes that the Jews of that city celebrated
July the Fourth by decorating their homes, closing their schools and holding
a special service in their synagogues. The Polish authorities resented the
jubilations in honor of America's independence and prohibited all public
manifestations.




Doctor Cyrus Adler, .keting-President of the Jewish Theological Sem-
inary of America announces that the new scholarships of the value of $750.00

\\'ithout consulting the Zionist authorities the Governor of Jerusalem
proceded to make repairs in the \Vestern Wall of the Temple. When this
became known, the excitement among the Jews rose to a high pitch, espe-
cially since the work was done on a Friday and Saturday, when many Jews
were there to pray. Through the intervention of the Zionist Commission
the work to "modernize" this old Jewish relic was discontinued.

der Sons of Zion net last Sunday at
an extraordinary convention, con-
vened with the object of deciding up-

isting relationship between the Order
and the general Zionist Organization.

They were answered very warmly by
Iron Wolfson, Dr. Steinberg and N.
cacao who went to great lengths to
prove that the Zionist Organization
was but on completely wiping out
the Order. A final vote resulted in
fat or of complete independence by
69 against 39. Stain delegates re-
frained from toting. A vote of con-
fidence in the existing Executive Com-
mittee was passed unanimously and
a resolution was adopted that the
11-t ions Committee of the general
Zionist Organization in Europe he
requested to grant the Order the
right to exist independently.

An organization was recently formed by some of the foremost Jewish
scholars in America, called the American Academy for Jewish Research. The
expressed purpose of this organization is "to enable Jewish scholars in Amer-
ica to assume their rightful place in American Jewry and to raise Jewish
scholarship to the dignity and position necessary to assure its healthy and
successful development in the future."

Cairo--At the last meeting of the Syrian Congress. the Palestine ques•

Madam Bertha Kalich, one of the foremost Jewish actresses and one of
the leading artists on the American stage, was recently the guest of honor
of the Temple Women's Association of Cleveland. Her pleasing address
and captivating manner charmed the large audience. She made an appeal for
greater appreciation of the art of acting and for the establishment of a
national theater. which should serve as a stimulus to the development of a
better drama in America. After her address, the Jewish matrons of Cleveland
tendered Madam Kalish a pretty reception and presented her with a large
bouquet of roses. Her many admirers left the temple greatly inspired.

Dr. Olga Davis. well known in Jewish communal circles. Chicago, passed
away recently at Mackinac Island. Since her graduation from the College
of Physicians and Surgeons ten years ago. Dr. Davis had donated her serv-
ices to the Emanuel Mandel !Memorial dispensary of the Michael Reese
Hospital, where she treated without remuneration poor families in the sec-
tion. Her work was almost entirely confined to charity. Dr. Davis was the
daughter of the late Pessach and Retie Davis, and a sister of Dr. H. 1. Davis,
Mrs. Julius IL Quasser, Mrs. Herman Schur, Ida, James, Abel and Maurice
Davis. The funeral was held on Thursday, August 12.
