supreme, but they have a prophetic vision of the day which shall see
all men dwelling together its brothers— tvhen the nations shall learn
the art of war no more— when the lion of power shall lie peacefully
beside the lamb of progress.
The Jew through educational proces;ses most show the non-Jew
that his genius is now as it ever has been a religiose , genius and not
a talunt fur politics or commerce or anything else. The Jew must
still show that as the eternal Priest people his supreme mission is
to teach the word if Cord to all men of all races in every land—that
less prime concern is to bring about Justice and peace through the
length and breadth of the world—that the world may be made safe
for mankind.
If the anti-Defamation League of the Irnai Frith can in a
measure spread this gospel of truth we need trot fear the result of
anti-Jewish articles fur when the truth shines into the hearts of our
fellow-citizens of non-lowish faith they will understand the Jew and
they will nit longer malign him.

Supplementary Services

The announcement of Temple Beth El that supplementary serv-
ices will again be held under the rutspices of the congregation this
year has occasioned no surprise in the Jewish community of Detroit.
For the past three years the congregation has supplied a great spirit-
ual need in the cormmunity by holding supplementary services to
which :all un-affiliated men and women were most cordially welcom-
ed. The many thousands who have I111 place to worship during the
lv of this oppor-
foly day season will undoubtedly avail them efts.
tunity as they have done in the past years.
In holding these services Temple Beth El is performing a plain
duty. No congregation has fulfilled its task if it only reaches those
who are members. A useful congregation is that which reaches out
in the wider community to touch the lives of all those who desire
to come tinder its influence. There are many people in every COM-
!pithily who for One reason or another And it impossible to affiliate
with any Jewish congregation. For those the holding of supple-
mentary services is indeed a boon. It is a peculiar fact that no mat-
ter how dead may be the spirit of the Jewish soul, interest and re-
ligious enthusiasm are awakened during the season of the High Holy
days. It is to foster this spirit and to make it possible for the spirit-
ual craving of thousands to be satisfied that Temple Ileth El is pre-
senting to the entire community an opportunity to worship at these
services during the festival season.
Because of the phenominal growth of the Congregation it is im-
possible to take care of the throngs which might wish to attend
services at the Temple proper, but this difficulty has been removed
by obtaining Orchestra Ilall for Rush I lashonah eve, Sunday. Sep-
tember 21, and Yung Kipper morning, Wednesday, September 22.
It is encouraging to note that the large congregations through-
out the country have followed Temple Beth El in arranging supple-
mentary services. It will be a happy day ha - :\merican Jewry when
all congregations make it possible for every Jewish individual in the
community to worship at least during the Holy clays.

I ant particularly surprised and
distressed at this article because
of your recent assurance to me

Night

By Isadore G. Ascher

The majesty of the sunset in the west
Has glorified the ebbing hours of day!
The world is hushed as if its heart would pray!
In busy Jewish homes there enters rest;
The weary soul no longer is depressed,
A Sabbath calm has come, the children stray
And prattle every sombre care away,
Our Friday night has made our portals blest!

The lamps are lit in solemn joy and prayer,
And curtains folded close to hide the night,
A glow of love in every Sabbath light!
Unspoken blessings fill the chastened air,
And happiness pursues time's gentle flight,
And over all God's blessings everywhere.
