Polish Propaganda in America
The attenipt of the Poles to re c,tablkil the ancient Kingdom of
Poland has been watched by people, in every country with intense
interest. Every civilized nation has given either its moral or physi-
cal support to the issue. roused by the magic cry of "self-determi-
nation for minority groups" the governments of the Universe have
been eager to give the divided Kingdom an opportunity to re-assem-
ble itself and to once again take its place in the sun. Even now
through the aid of the Allied Nations a truce is being planned where-
in international differences may be adjusted so that trouble-torn
Poland may find peace.
\•hile the %yodel has manifested its interest by materials, liberally
given, Poland has done little or nothing to justify its attempt to
rehabilitate itself as a nation. 'chose who have followed with any
degree of discernment all the disgraceful acts of the provisional goy•
ernment of Poland, those who have read ever accruing reports of
Polish atrocities, of Polish murders. Polish rapines and Polish mas-
sacres answer at otter, that it would be for the best interest of hu-
manity if the Polish people as such might forever disappear as a
nation. Dismembered nationally and scattered throughout the civil-
ized nations, the people of Poland might in turn become partially
civilized of their Tartar barbarity might disappear. Indeed, through
the refining touch of civilization even Poles might learn that to
murder is wrong, to rape is abhorrent, to massacre is cruel.
We say they might be affected in this manner because we realize
that among the other lower animals civilization can work remarkable
changes even upon the nature of the beast. The lion in his cage
becomes docile, the elephant when trained uses his brute strength
to perform useful tasks and even the viper with his fangs removed
loses his dangerousness, though unpleastult and distasteful to the
eye. And so we say that possibly scattered throughout the world
the Polish beast with his kinsman the lion, the elephant and the
viper may become docile, useful and dangerless.
Poles throughout the world taking advantage of the psychical
hysteria prevailing among the peoples, are using every means fair
ur foul to make propaganda for their cause. We have no objection
to their use of fair means to obtain their end in spite of the fact
that we believe that the world will make an everlasting mistake if
it permits hiland to raise her ugly head. We do, however, decidedly
object to the use of hail means used by the Polish propagandists and
Polish- newspapers. We do object not only on moral grounds, but
On the ground of Americanism to any foreign group such as the
Poles making propaganda to discredit Jews all over the world. We
do object to the savage beast baring his cruel fangs in this God
blessed land of freedom. Speeches are constantly brayed by Polish
asses advising their fellow donkeys not to trade with Jews. to boy-
cott them, to shun them, nay more, to destroy them. If the Poles
could, they would inaugurate pogroms in Detroit. There are some
Poles right here in Detroit, whose parched throats first for Jewish
blood. They f o re been away from the homeland so l o ng that they
hunger for the sight of a Polish picnic in which dying, tortured and
helpless Jews furnished the sport. These speeches in America as
they are, are carried in the Polish prt... regularly. These pernicious
Polish sheets, which carry the poison of hatred to inflame the breasts
of their readers do not hesitate to solicit Jewish advertising. Just
last week a Detroit Polish daily newspaper carried reports of a lec-
ture, a vicious anti-Iew ish attack upon Jews, as Jews—which was
delivered in Detroit by a prominent Polish orator in which he de-
nounced the Jews everywhere as the real enemies of Poland. 13 y-
cidt and the general destruction of the Jew was his solution to the
Polish problems. And what is most curious, in that very issue,
Jewish mercantile firms were represented by full page advertise-
ments.
If the Polish nation is to be re-established and refounded, it will
be well for the Poles to remember that a nation of the plunderous,
for the wicked and by the murderous cannot long endure—like the
Huns, the \ ambits and their ilk, they must eventually perish front

THE JEWS
IN _ CHINA
Bishop Wm. C. White,
Kaifengfu.
The more one looks into the In,
tory of the i'lline•t• Jews the more
one is saddened at their decay.
Probably Ilit•re is no similar in•
stance in histio- y wilco- a strong Jew-
ish common:1y such as ilk. Jew's of
china undoubtedly were, after a con-
tinuous existence of nearly 2,000
years. in the midst of a strongly idol-
atrous people, and without much per•
secution to speak of, should finally
succumb and as a religious entity he-
come non-existent.
There is no doubt hilt that there
was a great influx of Jews into China
during the Han dynasty, about the
beginning of this era. There had
probably been many Jewish traders
in China litany years before that, for
the main route by which l'hinese silk
pas•ed into the Roman Empire was
throng)] Antioch in Syria. In all
probability they Were Jewish traders,
who brought these goods from China,
and for this purpose they wond follow
the main caravan route from Bagdad
across Khorasan, Samarakand and
Chinese Turkestan into Kansuh,
Shensi, Horan and the other prov•
mess of China proper.
From tombs of the Han and l'ang
dynasties, opened up during the last
15 years, have been gathered clay fig.
ores of men and women, and among
them are some in foreign clothing,
with a distinctively Semitic type of
physiognomy. These tombs are
found in the western part of Horan,
along the line of what was the main
caravan route. from China out into
the west.
On one of the Kaifeng memorial
stones (14891 we are told that the
ancestors of the Chinese Jews came
by way of Tien-chub--.-a name applied
to both Persia and India—in obedi-
ence to the Divine command. That
there were over 70 clans in this par-
ticularly large itumigration, possibly
the destruction of the Temple, and
that they brought tribute cloth, no
doubt of cotton, for China at that
time grew no cotton.
In early times there were many
synagogues throughout China, and
the Jews Were hoth numerous and
wealthy. From Chinese records see
gather that there were four, if not
six, synagogues in the city of Chan-
gan Ino• Sianful; two, and probably
three, in the city of Kaifengtr, one
at least in Chinkiang, flangehow,
Ningpo, I.oyang (Honanful, Nanking
and Perking, and possibly one in
Ninglia•i, Canton and Slicking.

fegu, gave permission to the Jews to

capital in which to observe the cuts.
toms of their ancestors and to band
down their doctrines to their descend-
ants. This doe, not mean that the
Jews colony was only established in
Kaifeng at this time, for there is a
reference in Chinese records to a syn-
agogue which was in the Ningyuen
square of Kaifetqz, which was tradi-
tionally reported to have been erected
about the time of the incursion of
the west•rn Tartans during the Tsin
dynasty (third to fifth century).
It is quite possible that this im-
perial recognition gave precedence to
the Kaifeng synagogue, which tended
to make it more permanent. which is
why it has existed almost to the pres-
ent, while of all the other synagogues
there is no trace whatever. More-

Beat down upon the throng,
A moving throng of might,
Whose hearts and staunch and
strong.
Great hearts that are aflame
With that most sacred spark
That e'er remained the same,
Through gloomy years and dark.
Their faces, flushed with light
Where mingled Joy and tears
Foretell the strife, the plight,
They suffered through these years;
And o'er their lifted heads,
NOW gallantly once more
Streams that dear flag that bled
These thousand years and more.
They march their course unknown,
Their tired aching feet
Peel not the burning stone,
As through the scorching heat.
Their great brows crowned with
sweat,
They trample eagerly.
Their forms, erect, and Yet,
