CLOSED CAR FOR SUMMER. --- With the coming of the summer Most Inca know that we are not gel mug the same kind of gasoline that we once did. Everybody owning a car today is endeavoring to force a new Mel into a motor basically de- signed a number of years ago for a very different kind of gasoline. Is it any wonder that carbon formations and bearing troubles are becoming increasingly severe? All this time, however, progressive engineers have realized that this saute fuel of today actually does possess admirable qualities of power if this power could only be extracted by some new means. But motor car manufacturers, with their capital heavily invested in machinery, pat- terns, jigs, drawings and equipment for the production of the old style motors would naturally defer any rad- ical change because of the sacrifice of cost. As a substitute, numerous minor changes have been devised as stop- gaps for the situation. In this the Saxon Motor Car cor- poration jumped into the lead. Actu• aced by the knowledge that only a radical change in design could ex- tract full power front present day gas, they applied the idea of Duplex engi- neering and designed the 1920 Saxon motor. As a result, low-grade gas not only gives as much power as did the gasoline of five or six years ago, but actually more. By wringing two- fold power from this present grade of furl Saxon owners get 20 to 25 miles per gallon of gasoline. That the R & V Knight Six is soon to be joined by an it & V Knight Four is the news reaching Thomas H. Walker, general manager of Knights Motors Inc., from the factory of the Root & Vendervoort Engineering Co., Moline, Ill. Though production of the four-cylinder R. & V. Knight models has been delayed somewhat by the demand for the six-cylinder cars, the first of the smaller machines is expected at the Knight salesrooms by September I. Walker, who is high- ly enthusiastic over the prospect of a "little brother" to the Knight Six, which is the only one of its kind in America, says the new cars will fol- low closely the lines and specifica- tions of the six-cylinder models, but of course will be smaller. In the same way figure as lubricating expense broken piston rings, worn wristpins and the cost of eliminating motor knocks, cylin- der and pistols wear. "Another disadvantage of poor oil is that is is weakened much more readily than good oil when on first starting a cold motor the gasoline vapor condenses and runs down the cylinder walls. The poorer the oil the easier it is for gasoline to wash out the film of lubricant between the piston and cylinder walls. "Good oil will protect the main bearing, as well as the connecting rod and piston pin bearings, against destructive wear. When the crank- shaft is revolving at a rate of 1,000 to 2,000 revolutions a minute, a terrific heat would be generated between the shaft and bearings if the oil lacked sufficient body and quality." Within the past few years the closed car has made rapid strides in public favor as an all-season vehicle. That the favorable attitude of the public toward the all-season touring sedan o,-coupe is not confined to cer- tain sections of the country is indi- cated in reports from automobile deal- ers throughout the United States. Dealers say that in the past year or two they have experienced consider- able difficulty in securing closed cars in quantities sufficient to meet the de- mand of the spring and summer months. "The reason for the high favor with which the closed type of automobile is regarded seems obvious," says Charles V. Voorhis, vice-president and general sales manager of the Nash Motors company. "The well- built closed car affords, in summer and winter, a greater measure of com- fort than is possible to obtain in the open type of vehicle. With windows lowered, the touring sedan or coupe becor..es an open ear, providing un- usual protection from dust, rain storms, and other summer disturb- ances. • In the winter months, with windows closed and equipped with a heater, the sedan or coupe always is comfortable."
