MR. JOSEPH MATTHEWS,

Managing Director

Controlled by

Edgewater Beach Hotel Co.

Michigan is looking forward to the
greatest vacation summer of its his-
tory, and the advance guard of the
army seeking recreation and rest
from the sparkling waters of De-
troit's blue river to the cool wood-
lands of the northern. islands' indi-
cates that the hope' will not he in
vain. Cool summers, a war period
and the summer just past, when busi-
ness was at such a rush and bluster
that there scarcely seemed' tittle for
rest, have gone to make up quiet
spots in the state's vacation history.
'fins year, flowerer, sees almost
everyone with a nest egg, almost
everyone with time enough to take
a week or two al the least and a
month or more at the maximum.
Not only have the citizens of all
the United States gained knowledge
of Michigan's lakes and rivers, but
Detroiters and other city dwellers
within the commonwealth are dis-
covering more and more each year
how many joys and comforts are
waiting them at their doorstep. The
sea is no cooler than the tumbling
waters of the Great Lakes, and
Maine or Colorado offer no cooler
retreats among giant forests of the
northern peninsula. Fishing here
equals that of any state and all the
other vacation joys from boating and
bathing to lolling in shade-filled
nooks while orchestras and bands
bands play rag and jazz arc to be
had.

A PLAN FOR EVERYONE.
For those who love the summer
society call the stately hotels of
Mackinac and similar resort cities
offer everything that moncy can buy
in addition to all the beatifies of Na-
ture. For the family •seeking rest
and calm after a year of the city's
uproar there are a hundred lake and
river resorts tucked away from the
rush of travel where all the simpler
joys are to be had and no one need
bother about "dressing up." 'Ole
happy medium is also there where
one can go shabby and carefree All
day and at night he as formal as one
wishes with comradeship for both

staft '.e r' e ' ry train coming into Detroit
and the other gateway towns are
loaded with fun-seekers from near-
by stales and the fleets of ships of
all the lines bordering or touching
the state are packed to the rail with
crowds that are divided in their ob-
jects, half to remain and cruise about
the island seas and half to disembark
to play with the thousands that pre-
ceded them.

More and more are employers dis-
covering that the longer vacation
gives them ample repayment in re-
newed ambition and pep when their
employes return, browned and fat
from the rest and fun, and employ-
ers are also discovering that the "old
man" needs a rest as welt- as the
"hands" and the family.

!every sort of water and open air
sport. Boat races, yacht races, base
ball, tennis, even boxing and wrest-
ling are all on tap at all tiules in
the larger resorts while the art of
swimming has been taken up by hun-
dreds of men and women who have
never before attempted it.

EMINENT YIDDISH STAR
NEW DETROIT FRIDAY

The eminent Yiddish star, Morris
Schwartz, conies to the New Detroit
, Theatre on Friday. July 2 for four
performances several of which in
"Tavie Der Mlichiger" by Stollen:

' reef fruit the Irving Place Theatre,
New York City.
Mr. Schwartz is universally acknowl-
edged by those familiar with his art
se ono of the most marvelous deline-
ators of character on the stage today,
j presenting an he does with the utmost
fidelity every note that can be played
upon nature's great harp. the human
soul. Sometimes it is a sumptuous
melody, rich with various tine har-
mony, again It is a powerful, stirring
crash of seeming discords that yet
unite to form a wonderful, great
tragic these; always, however, It is
forceful, vigorous—nothing academic,
pale or precise—In short, true art; a
holding of the mirror op to Nature
such as the great Master of Drama
himself must have conceived.
In order to appreciate this great
actor at his best, one should see him
In that signal success in the United
Styles and Canada, In "Tavie Der
Milehiger," one will then realise what
has made Mr. -Morris Schwartz an
greatly, sought both In this country
and Canada.
"Tarte tier Milehiger" played In the
Irving Place Theatre of Nev." York, in
Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and oth-
r;r leading cities of the United States.
Those who fulled to see this great
artistic triumph missed a wonderful
opportunity, not only to witness a
sisterly production of a splendid
play, but a play with siteations that
relieve the Intensity of the story and
each and every character that is In-
troduced In tile action of the Pliny Is
