CARRIAGES
MUSIC NOTES
By HERMANN HOEXTER.
Under the caption "Justice to the
Jew," one of the leading New York
musical weeklies prints an interesting
letter from the pen of a zealous sub-
scriber, in which the writer deplores
the tendency of the majority of
musicians at present active on the
concert platform,' to hide their very
distinctive Jewish origin under the
cloak of nationality. He seems to be-
lieve that advertising a pianist as
"Russian," or a soprano as "Polish,"
when each is nothing if not purely
Jewish, is an insult to that large Jew-
ish public which so liberally supports
these pme artists. They cloak their
religion with nationality which is
only, accidental, and then, because of
the craze for foreign artists with
queer, more or less euphonious
names; they proceed to reap a green-
back harvest on the strength of this
combination. The writer concludes
thatia justice to the great majority
of J ws who are contributing to the
music-making of the world, the repre-
sentative artists ought not to camou-
flage, their nationality (I suppose he
means origin), and come before their
public solely on the convincing pow-
ers of their artistry as Jews.
Sehr schoen. The erudite editor-
in-chief of this same weekly (another
Jew) professes himself a liberal in
his answer, "who can see no value in
perpetuating the Jews as a separate
race," who discounts nationality, and
argues that the public goes to hear
au artist, not because he or she is
American or Armenian, Jew or Gen-
tile, but because he or she is a good
artist, and one in whom talent and
the ability to bring pleasure are the
prime factors to be considered in
guaging their worth and standing.
Both writers seem to have missed
the target completely, shot their ar-
rows wide of the mark. And the
point is so obvious too. Consider for
a moment some of the artists who
have appeared in Detroit this past
season, and then wonder with me
why it should be at all necessary to
advertise them as Jews, Russian,
Polish, American. ur as I once over-
