3.1r. Jacob, who is only 33 years old.
has shown a rise in the business
world in Detroit during the past few
years that has been almost meteoric.
I know a man---you may know many Already he is a leader among Jewish
business men of the city. His elec-
more,
Whose greatest achievement iv talk. tion to the directorate of the Detroit
Board of Commerce, which is one of
log.
And worst of all, he expostulates lore,
Which Reason Is constantly-balking.
They coot tt to crowds with a mouth
futpOl words-
Pedanfi, and garrulous, monsters.
A nokoy typo this brood of human
birds
These vapid, Impractical songsters.
Their flow of wit k cheap end enfold-
ing,
They sneer at expressions of milers.
And strange as it seems, their blatant
pretending
is skin deep, the crowd soon dis-
covers.
Oh, give me the man, whase Reason
Is ellty.
Though slow, is as deep as the
ocean.
Talkers may shine, but the thinkers
endure,
And anise It far greater commotion.

Talk versus Reason

THE OFFENDED FRIEND.

we only see the clouds,
When the sun shines bright and clear,
Oh, why will we see the shadow
When the substance is so near?
Why will we see the little frowns.
When the great big smiles are there,
Just begging for a little smile,—
And never a thought of care.
Why do we harp on little words,
That are not meant to offend,
When great big deeds just show the
truth,
And the great big heart of a friend.

Belgrade.—Representatives of the
Jewish National Council of Jugo-
Savlia have submitted a memorandum
to the Serbian Minister, 'Milan Prib-
itschewitsch, complaining against the
fact that nn: ny Jews are being ex•
tidied from the country.
The Nlinister replied in au unusual-
ly cordial manner and assured the
Council that these expulsions were
directed not against the Jews, but
only against certain disturbing de-
ments of the population, which had
entered the country during the war.
Among those who are being expelled,
many, he declared, are non-Jews.
However, the Minister besought the
representatives of the Jewish National
Council to inform hint of eve-y it
stance in which they found suchex-
pulsions resulting front the act of any
petty, anti-Semitic official, and he
would gladly redress the wrong.
The Jewish National Coaled of
Jugo-Slavia was established a tear
ago, when it became apparent that
among the "freed" Jogo-Slms, an
earliest anti-Semitic agitation was in
progress. All the Jewish ClInntlIni -
ties—Aslikenazian and Sephardian-
then met in a congress at Essay,
where the National Council origin-
ated as a permanent representative
body in Belgrade, for all the Jews of
the country.

the largest organizations of its kind
in the world. was a tribute to his
business ability, as well as to the in-
terest he has shown in civic matters.
During the war he was a team cap-
tain in the various Liberty loan
drives, and he was one of the big
business men of Detroit to give all
his time to putting Detroit across as
the first great city of the country in
subscribing its quota in bonds. Mr.
Jacob was also wanted on the Board
of Commerce directorate because of
his experience in his building projects,
and the assistance he will be able to
give business men in the continued
expansion of the city.
