The problems of peace, as did the problems
of war, involve heavy expenditures by
the Telephone Company.
There is much reconstruction and even
more advance construction work to do
before the former position of Readiness
to Serve is regained.
Little or no construction work for two
years, a vast increase in demand for
service and avast increase in the popula-
tion to be served, presents a stunning
problem to the telephone management.
A dollar will not buy as much service or
as much material as heretofore, which
further complicates the problem.
In the circumstances the Telephone
Company must adopt the policy so
uniform among merchants in every
line of business and sell its service at
higher prices.
The higher rates are a protection to a
service that is in the interest and for
the convenience of every subscriber.

Philomathic Debating Club

The question of railroad manage-
ment and finance occupied the chief
attention of the Philomathic Debating
Club at its meeting last Sunday even-
ing when the subject "Resolved
That the Plumb Plan of Railroad
Operation be Adopted" was energet-
ically debated. The advocates of the
measure, Jack Schneider and Reuben
Kaman, presented their arguments
so effectively that they won the de-
hate by a vote of 14 to 7. Maurice
Aturamoff and Wilbur De Young up-
held the negative side of the ques-
tion. The critic of the evening was
Maurice Meyers.
At the next meeting, January 11th,
merriment will hold full sway, as the
program for that evening has been
designated as "Humorous Program."
Every members of the club will parti-
cipate. A distinct novelty is offered
the Philomathic Debating Club for
the January 18th meeting. Mrs.
Jacob G. Brown, honorary member of
the club, has invited the entire organ-
ization to hold their regular meeting
that evening at her home, where she
will entertain the members. A spe-
cial program is being arranged by
the Debate Committee for that oc-
casion.
