INDIANA PASTOR PAYS
TRIBUTE TO "THE JEWS"

Nlichigan City, Ind.—In a sermon
impressive in its sincerity and earnest-
ness, Rev. Frederick E. Hopkins, of
the First Presbyterian Church, paid
a wonderful tribute to the Jew.
Dr. Hopkins said in part:
"A religious people are always de-
serving. and the Jews are religious.
A cultured people are always deserv-
ing, and as we have shown the Jews
are cultured. A brave people are al-
ways deserving, and right amongst
us 200,004) have shown themselves
brave on land and sea. A generous
people are always deserving, and the
. Jews
• in every time of need have
shown themselves generous. An in-
dustrious people are always deserv-
ing, and the Jews are industrious. A
patient and forbearing people are al-
ways deserving, and under strong
provocation the Jew has kept Isis tem-
per. A peace loving people are de-
serving and the Jew- keeps the peace.
A people that take care of their own
and seldom ask favors are a deserv-
ing people, and the Jews take splen-
did care of their own."

Paris.—Denikine, through his rep-
resentative here, Maklakov, has de-
clared that it is inadvisable for Jew-
ish organizations to zttempt to send
relief to the Ukrainian Jews, because
it would create bad feeling among
the Ukrainians themselves against
the latter. This statement was sent
to the Jewish representatives in Paris,
who, through Ambassador Makla-
kov, had sent a telegraphic appeal
to Dcnikine that they be allowed to
supply clothing to the pogrommed
Jews in the Ukraine. The petition
also asked whether the Jews might
send a commission to the Ukraine to
investigate the places which hail been
pogrommed, and to determine what
help ought first to be sent to the
Jewish victim S.
Denikine's reply declared that it
would be dangerous to send clothing
and supplies to the Jews at a time
when the rest of the" population was
practically naked and starving, as
such a course would serve only to
arouse in them hatred against the
Jews, and would surely lead to new
outbreaks. For the same reason he
opposed sending a Jewish commis-
sion.
Denikine "Passes Buck."
New fork.—Admitting that thou-
sands of Jews have been massacred
in parts of Russia from which the
main Bolshevist forces have been
driven, the Information Bureau of all
Anti-Soviet Forces in Russia with
headquarters in this city issued a
statement asserting that these mas-
sacres had usually been committed
by local chieftains. According to the
statement, General Dessikin, instead
of countenancing pogroms, has caus-

.New York.—This week 560 Jewish
legionnaires reached New York,
among them many well known Jew-
ish journalists and writers, including
Mr. H. L. Gordon, the musical critic
Baron, and the novelist Bruches.
This is the last large group of le-
gionnaires to return. Only a few
more are still waiting to come back
to the United States, and the rest
will remain in I'alrstine, some as
colonists in the new Balfouria which
the Zion Commonwealth is founding,
and the others as journalists, social
workers, and in similar capacities.

NEW CLUB POTENT FACTOR
IN JEWISH COMMUNITY

Amied tremendous enthusiasm, the
new Men's Temple Club of Temple
Beth El was called into existence on
Wednesday evening, December 17,
and permanent officers were elected
on the following Sunday afternoon.
On the roster of charter members arc
several hundred names of earnest, en-
thusiastic, wide-awake men. The
need for such an organization has
long been felt and the interest al-
ready manifested in the plans and
purpose of the club, indicates that by
the creation of this new organization,
there has come into the life of the
community, a new and powerful force
for good. The essential purpose of
the Temple Club will be religious,
though its activities will touch every
phase of Jewish life, social, educa-
tional and philanthropic.
