congregation may make the life of the rabbi utterly miserable and
render his work ineffective. \Ve know of more than one instance
where because of the domination and unfairness of the President of
the Board of Directors of the congregation, men of consecrated
spirit have not only been driven front some particular pulpit, but
in despair and disgust, have left the ministry altogether.
Where that has been the case, a wholesome lesson might be
taught if self-respecting rabbis would refuse to till the pulpit that
has thus been vacated. We do not, as a rule, endorse the principle
of boycott, but we arc not entirely sure that "Unity" has not sug-
gested an effective means of meeting a situation that is not only
deplorable in itself, but that—if left unchecked—is bound to make
for the disintegration of congregational influence and fur the weak-
ening of religion's hold upon the hearts of men.
A Notable Service.
The Eighteenth Annual Community Thanksgiving Service,
which filled to its capacity the auditorium of the New Detroit Opera
House on Thursday of last week, was an event of more than passing
interest. Participated in by representatives of nine great religious
organizations, the service was deeply spiritual in character and yet
so fine and big and broad in spirit that not a word was sung or
spoken that might by any stretch of the imagination have offended
against the religious sensibilities of a single person in the great
congregation that had assembled to participate in the morning's
worship.
It is no small thing to have been able to maintain this service
amid the ever-changing personnel of the Detroit ministry for a
period of almost two decades. But it is a greater thing so to have
built up through this service the spirit of true fraternity that every
participating minister, of whatever denomination, feels it is not
merely his duty but his joy to forget for a little while the things
that divide men and to lay his stress upon the great spiritual bonds
Prof. Joseph Hayden, assistant
professor of political science at the
University of Michigan, discussed
with clarity and understanding that
mooted triangle, ''The President, the
Senate and the Treaty" at the regu-
lar afternoon meeting of the Jewish
Woman's Club on Monday, Decem-
ber 1. at Temple Beth El.
Prof. Hayden in a clever delinea-
tion of this subject showed a keen
insight into this political struggle that
has embodied the world. Differentiat-
ing between constitutional and incon-
stittitional treaties, the speaker cited
the experience of Washington who
sought the advice of the senate be-
fore opening negotiations in an effort
to avert war with Great Britain. Not
successful in obtaining the approval
of his projects from the senate,
Washington fornuilated the custom of
submitting his bills through the Sec-
retary of State and appointed a
standing committee of five on foreign
relations, which remains today the
oldest known committee.
l'rof. Hayden defined the three
steps in the formation of a treaty,
first the process of apportioning;
second, the signature by proper rep-
resentation, and thirdly, the step of
ratification, performed by the Presi-
dent in other countries, but carried
through the senate in ours. The
speaker discussed the opinions of the
various groups in the senate in their
attitude toward the peace treaty and
stated it had taken a firm stand in
insisting that the public know inti-
mately the provision of the covenant.
