R e markable Progress of Congre- g ation in Past Year Reported at 69th Annual Membership Meet- ing Last Tuesday. ISAAC GOLDBERG IS ELECTED PRESIDENT The Sixty-ninth Annual Meeting of Congregation Beth El, which took place in the Temple Assembly Rooms, Tues- day evening, October 28th, covered, in its various detailed and exhaustive re- ports, the most notable year in the his- tory of the congregation. An audience that taxed the capacity of the meeting rooms attested to the whole-hearted interest of members of Temple Beth El in the manifold activities of their congregation, which, with a membership approximating 800, ranks among the three largest 'congregations in the coun- tee appointed by President Vl'ilson, has been investigating the pogroms in Po- land, has arrived at New York and will proceed to Washington to make his re- port at an early date. Mr. Morgenthan declines to be interviewed or to make any statement in regard 'to what took place in Poland. The public will have to await the publication of his official report to be informed. Mr. blorgenthau advocated the accep- tance by the United States of a man- date for Constantinople, Armenia, and Anatolia. In this connection Mr. Mor- genthau is reported to have said "Our people will expect Great Bri- tain to welcome us in the blediterra- 'lean and the Near East, not as a rival or competitor, but as a full partner with all rights, privileges and responsibilities. I have thought deeply as to how Great Britain can demonstrate her willingness and think the best way would be by her giving us an equal control of the straits ,,f Gibraltar.' try. en Reports were submitted by Presidt Bernard Ginsburg, by Rabbi Leo M. Franklin, by Mr. Israel Cohn, director of the Sabbath School Board; by Mrs. I. Goldberg, president of the Women's Auxiliary Association; by Mr. Robert Yanover, president of the Young Peo- ples Society; by Warden Emanuel Wo(lic, Treasurer Adolph Finsterwald, and Secretary Magnus A. Hirschfield. Every report presented indicated, the splendid progress that has been made along every line ofCongregational activity and expressed ihe greatest op- timism for the future of Temple Beth El. The largest budget ever submitted to the congregaton was unanimously ap- proved, granting, with others, a generous increase in the salary of Rabbi Leo M. Franklin. Assistant Rabbi Samuel S. blayerberg's term having expired, the Board heartily endorsed his reappoint- ment for a period of three years at an increase of $600 a year. A mammoth "pep" meeting of four thousand volunteer workers, which took place Friday night, Oct. 31, at the Elks' Temple, marked the launching of the second annual campaign Of the Detroit Patriotic Fund, which will open officially Monday, Nov. 3. Interspersed through the enthusiastic assemblage were over five hundred Jewish men and women who are giving freely of their time and their ener- gies that the campaign may be brought to a successful conclusion. Over 250 women will serve under the able chairmanship of Mrs. David A. Ilrown, Captain of Women's Work of Division D, whose task includes the personal solicitation of 1(1,000 persons. Julian H. Krolik, major of District C of the campaign, has working with him as many men of Jewish faith.. While the campaign is all-sectarian and no group of Jewish men and women have been singled out to work as a unit, it is gratifying to note the response Of the:Jewish community to the appeal for workers.
