Amongst the many delicacies with
which the Romans, especially in their
degenerate (lays were well acquainted,
there was also asparagus. They cul-
tivated it largely, and prized it highly
as a vegetable. In course of time the
Jews also learned to know it. In the
Talmul it is repeatedly mentioned un-
der the proper Latin name — aspr-
agus. It appears, however, that the
Jews also know its medicinal proper-
ties, to some extent, at all events.
They made an infusion of it which
they believed to be "good for the
heart." Whether they also knew its
dieuretic properties does not appear.
The infusion was made from the roots
of the plant, which were soaked in
wine and rendered more palatable by
the addition of various spices. This
is one more proof that the apothe-
cary's art was well known to the an-
cient Jews.
