in Poland, Is Report
D. \V. Simons was re-elected presi-
dent of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue
by acclamation at the annual !sleeting
d- the congregation held. Monday
night, October 13. Abrarn Jacobs. was
unanimously re-elected vice-president
and Joseph Wetsman was made treas-
urer.
The following were elected on the
hoard of directors: Isadore Levitt, H.
S. Blumenthal, Harry II. Keidan, Ja-
cob Nathan and David R. Stocker. A
secretary will be chosen by the new-
ly appointed board of directors at
their next meeting November 3.
D. S. Zenon, chairman of the Clov-
er Hill Park Cemetery Committee,
gave a details'd account of the telling
work of the cemetery association.
Among many other improvements he
reported that the artificial lake had
been completed. Hundreds of trees
and shrubs were planted and hun-
dreds more will lie planted in the
coming months. A massive stone gate
has been erected and a beautiful wait-
ing room built at the entrance on
Woodward avenue. Plans are now
under way for the erection of a me-
morial building to cost between forty
and fifty thousand dollars next year.
A large increase in membership and
congregational activities was report-
ed. Plans for further developing the
commupal purposes of the synagogue
for young and old were discussed.
New York—New and dreadful dis-
eases, previously unknown to medi-
cal science, have developed to a great
extent throughout Poland and mat-
nutrition and hunger are responsible,
according to Mr. Bernard Horwich
■ If the Joint Distribution Committee
of \ merican funds for the relief of
Jcty ish sufferers from the war.
How the lack of proper food has
affected the morals, as well as the
physical condition, of the Jews is in-
terestingly commented upon by Mr.
Horwich in a report received at the
American Jewish relief headquarters
here.
Within the past two years, he says,
great numbers of little orphaned chit-
dred have died throughout Poland,
although in spite of the high death
rate there are still some 40000 father-
less and motherless little folks. Dur-
ing the past two or three years infant
and child mortality has been so heavy
that few under six years of age have
survived. Typhus and other diseases
are claiming thousands of victims.
Mr. Horwick makes this observation
as to the moral and mental effect of
this life of constant hunger and dis-
ease:
"Among the Jewish population I
failed to notice an increase in crime,
accusations against them being large-
ly political in nature. There is an un-
duly large number of men, women
and children begging on the streets.
"Few suicides have occurred in Po-
land, to my knowledge. which fact is
probably due to the influence of the
Jewish religion. Insanity is reported
on the increase."
