personal, each man may take them unto himself. Most of all, how-
ever, the pulpit address must make men think of the meaning nd

purpose of life. The great majority of men and women in these
days, instead of directing their lives to a definite goal, are simply
hopelessly drifting. It should be an essential part of the preacher's
task to correct this situation.
The ultimate test of successful preaching is not praise and

applause for the preacher's eloquence, but the heightened ideals
and the greater willingness to serve on the part of those who
in the pew.

We join in the earnest prayer of every loyal American, that
President be spared to carry forward to fruition, the splendid
health and vigor. Such a prayer was pronounced in practically
every synagog throughout the land during the recent Atonement

Day services.
May the petition of our people be heard on high and may our
President be spared to carry forward to fruition, the splendid
works begun by him its behalf of justice and humanity.

Our Episcopalian Guests

Some surprise has been expressed in certain quarters that
Congregation Beth El should have put its magnificent place of
worship at the disposal of the Episcopalian Convention for a
period of two weeks. Why such surprise should arise in any quar-
ters, we fail to understand. Surely it is the least courtesy that one
religious organization can show to another, to offer it in case of
need, the hospitality of its house of worship. Accordingly, there
was no hesitation on the part of the Board of Officers of Temple
Beth El when the request came from our Episcopalian friends, to
rent the building. They declined to rent it but they were very
happy indeed to grant the use of the building to the convention,

And to the mind, sharp come the scenes,

To launch the best Mill on the tide.

To float on life's stream just the kind
To render back the world its best,
A trained and true and noble mind,
To stand the storm's most trying test.

This mil the type our masters meant
Should carry on their serious work,
And never one would they have sent
Out in the world that drust to shirk.

And often have I felt the sting—
Not measuring up to their high aims.

Patriotic Fund Workers Wanted

Tishri 16, 5680

President Wilson

The day with all its cares has fled,
The peace of night's calm lifts the veil
That screens the Inem'ries nearly dead,
And lights the oar's past weary trail.

The annual campaign of the Detroit Patriotic Fund opens
November 3rd and will continue for five days. In order that the
requisite suns of money may be speedily forthcoming, it is impera-
tive that an army of workers be organized to visit previous donors
to the cause and such newcomers to the city as ought to participate
in so notable an undertaking.
The success of the Patriotic Fund idea has been proved. No
arguments need be brought forward at this time to press home
the tremendous advantages involved in this plan over any other
plan that has yet been devised for the gathering of the huge sum
of money required to carry on the patriotic and philanthropic
activities of the community. \\'e believe that it may be said with-
out the fear of contradiction, that there is not a single business
man in Detroit who would not rather contribute in one sum or
at least in one subscription, the amount that he feels it his duty
and privilege to subscribe to the various causes represented in the
Patriotic Fund, than to be called smolt continually to give smaller
amounts to each of them separately.
Moreover, the expense of administration as well as the dance
of duplication is by the joint collection reduced to a practical
minimutn. However, they who have most realized the benefits of
the Patriotic Fund idea of which the so-called Community Union
is a part, are the Boards of Officers and the social workers of our
various philanthropic institutions. Heretofore, much of their time
had to be given to the discussion of ways and means of getting
the necessary funds with which to carry on their work. Now that
all of these organizations are rather adequately financed, the
workers and officers can give their time and attention to the con-
structive problems of social betterment. This advantage alone is
immeasurable and any argument that could be brought in favor of
the old method of separate collections, would be more than out-
