The successful completion of the
first year of the existence of the new
Wilkins Talmud Torah, on 107 W'ilk-
ins street, was celebrated last Sun-
day by the parents of the boys and
girls attending this school at a spe-
cial meeting and concert held in the
auditorium of the Talmud Torah.
About 3101 people were gathered to
hear a report of the year's activities.
The Wilkins Talmud Torah is at pres-
ent classed among one of the finest
Jewish institutions of its kind itt the
country. As a school building it can
compete with any modern school
house. It has all of the modern im-
provements, has a playground for the
children, and is on the whole an at-
tractive and inviting edifice.
Mr. B. Isaacs, the principal of the
Talmud Torah, gave a financial and
general report of the progress made
by this institution. He also outlined
the future work of the Hebrew
school and revealed plans for a great-
er increase of activities in the insti•
tution. Mr. E. Rabinowitz, the presi-
dent of the Talmud Torah, acted as
chairman of the meeting. .k musical
program was presented by the chil-
dren of the school and by the special
choir who sang Jewish and national
hymns.
The Wilkins street Talmud Torah
instructs daily more than 600 Jewish
boys and girls. The "Ivrith blyrith"
method, or "Hebrew in Hebrew," is
followed. There is no Yiddish at all
spoken and very little of English.
The children are spoken to and of-
fered explanations in Hebrew with
remarkable results. Already this Tal-
mud Torah boasts of several score
of boys and girls who can speak a
fluent English. The system as
adopted by the Wilkins as well as
every other Talmud Torah in De-
troit is one that has been adopted
universally by the Jews of almost
every country on the globe. Louis
Llarshall, president of the American
Jewish Committee, upon his return
from abroad some time ago. ex-
plained the rise of the Hebrew spirit
and prophesied that Yiddish would
soon the out and Hebrew will be-
come the everyday language of the
Jew.
The Talmud Torah is at all times
open to visitors, and the principal,
Mr. Isaacs, will lie glad to welcome
ally resident who is interested in the
institution.

Solomon Golub, Jewish singer and
composer, will give a recital of his
own works on Wednesday evening,
October 8, at McCollester hall, Cass
and Forest avenues. Jules L. Klein,
Floyd Hickman'. Superb Orchestra,
cellist, and Frank Bahr, pianist, will
render the accompaniments. This
will mark Mr. Golub's second appear-
ance in Detroit, his first recital hav-
ing been given at the Arts and
Crafts last winter.
Those who heard Mr. Golub on
his previcus visit to the city were
delighted with his sympathetic inter-
pretation of the spiritual experiences
of the Jewish people. Freeing him-
self from the melodic lamentations of
exile, which in the past has been
the bane of Jewish music and barrier
against its development, he has
sought out the best lyrical posses-
sions of the Yiddish and the lie-
brew literature and has woven their
text and music into a profound ex-
pression of the Jewish spirit.
In his program Wednesday even-
ing, Mr. Golub will include several
of his own compositions. "Tan-
chum," one of his most popular
songs, is a typical ballad, represent-
ing the agonies of the unrequited as,
love of a Talmudic student who
plunges with full zest into the learned
lore of the rabbi, so that he may
drown his emotions. "Fier Gulden
Oif Shabbes," dealing with the trials
and tribulations of an impoverished
Talmudist. qiurikes Oif Peisach,"
concerned with the trepidation of a
good housewife who finds at the last
moment that she has no beets for
the Seder Feast, are of a lighter vein
and of such lilting rhythm that the
Detroit audience unconsciously hum-
med the chorus with the singer.
Poems by Simon Frug. J. Jaffe, A.
Reisen and Morris Rosenfield, put to
music by Mr. Golub, will be included
in his program Wednesday evening.
