COPENHAGEN—A deputation of
Jews and Christians arrived at Vilna
from Fastnoff (near Dina) to appeal
for immediate assistance. The dele-
gates declared that the population and
especially the three hundred and six-
ty Jewish inhabitants, were literally
O starving. They produced samples of
bread eaten by the inhabitants, which
were made of grass and had a hor-
rifying appearance. On account of
the military operations in the imme-
diate vicinity, they were cut off from
the neighboring villages and unable
to purchase food. In addition the
Polish soldiers organized a pogrom
and deprived the Jews of nearly all
they possessed. Many Jewish shop-
keepers were also cruelly beaten. The
delegates declared that the situation
in most of the neighboring townlets
was equally bad.

granted to all soldiers and sailors of
Jewish faith for observance of the
New Year and the Day of Atonement,
according to an announcement made
by Colonel harry Cutler, Chairman of
the Jewish Welfare Board. Arrange-
ments are accordingly being made by
the Jewish Welfare Board for the en-
tertainment of the men in uniform by
the community branches of the organ-
ization in towns adjacent to canton-
ments. Arrangements also are being
made to hold Rosh Hashonah and
Vont Kippur services in Jewish Wel-
fare Board huts in all camps and naval
bases in this country and France and
on transports bringing back soldiers
from France.
Instructions have been issued by
Adjt.-Gen. U. C. Harris to all officers
of the army, as follows:
"The War Department desires that
furloughs be granted to men of Jew-
ish faith for the New Year from noon,
Sept. 24, to the morning of Sept. 28,
and for the Day of Atonement from
noon, Oct. 2, to the morning of Oct.
6, if this does not interfere with pub-
lic service. If military necessity pre-
vents granting furloughs, provision to
be made for them to hold divine ser-
vices wherever possible on days men-
tioned."
Similar orders have been issued to
officers of the navy.
