ROSS SCHRAM
SECRETARY

To The Detroit Jewish Chronicle:

On the eve of Rosh Hashonah, I wish to extend my
wishes to the Jewish citizens of Detroit for a happy, suc-
cessful New Year.

Good government must be the foundation of our re-
construction work and the citizen's interest in his munic-
ipality's administration is the greatest incentive to con-
scientious endeavor on the part of the officials. I know of
no people which evinces a greater interest in government
than the Jewish.

Among Detroit's leaders in industry, finance and art
are many of your citizens, to whom we all look for in-
spiration in the days ahead of us. Detroit's progress is
to a great degree contingent upon their co-operation.

With the help of these indefatigable workers, I am
sure our city is bound to hold her leadership among the
greatest in America.

At this time I also wish to express my great esteem
for your editor, Rabbi Franklin, whose good citizenship
is an example to all.

Yours very truly,

Gentlemen:

I thank you for the privilege you give me to extend
to the Jewish people of Michigan, through your worthy
publication, my hearty wishes for a Happy New Year.,

I am deeply impressed with the fact that through
many long centuries the Jewish people, although widely
dispersed and suffering often from injustice and wrong,
have maintained in a marvelous way their integrity and
continuity.

The family life of the Jew is most admirable and his
business ability is universally recognized.

I am glad to bear my testimony to the high standing
of the Jewish citizens of Michigan and to assure you that
in the great world war, now happily ended, their loyalty
to Democracy and to American institutions was abundantly
demonstrated.

UNITED STATES SENATE

WASHINGTON, D. C.

To the Publishers

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle.

Gentlemen:

It is with much pleasure that I take the opportunity
to say just a word concerning my appreciation of the part
so nobly taken by the Jewish citizenry of our country in
the great war and in civil life generally.

It was my privilege to serve with many officers and
men of the Jewish faith in the Third Naval District in
New York for over nineteen months, where I was con-
stantly impressed with the fidelity, zeal and intense
patriotism of the members of your faith, and their daily
contribution to the industrial and civic life of our com-
munity, and their loyalty to their country was one of the
most illuminating of my many experiences.

I take this opportunity to congratulate The Detroit
Jewish Chronicle in the Jewish New Year number, and
to wish to you and to all your subscribers the Happiest
of New Years.

With kind regards and all good wishes, I remain,

Very sincerely yours,

A NEW YEAR GREETING

By BERNARD GINSBURG

President, Temple Beth El

My Dear Friends:

When we pick up a magazine, quarterly, monthly, or
weekly, when we pick up daily papers, both morning and
evening, we see the word "peace" reiterated again and
again, and it almost seems as if it were a new word and it
had just been added to our dictionary.

It is true that a year ago, in our minds, in our hearts,
and on the tip of our tongues, this word was constantly
appearing with the wish to the good God that its realiza-
tion would come soon. And it did come.

The Jewish people, particularly those in the European
countries, are passing through the most serious crisis in
their history, and all they are asking, is for this word
"peace," so they may live their lives as we would wish
them to live, and as the good God wants them to live.

To me, this word "peace" has always been the most
important word. I have always felt that all our ambitions
ought to be directed towards this end. The real achieve-
ment of this word "peace" is a true solution of the prob-

lems of life.

To you, my dear friends, on the eve of a New Year,
my prayers are all for the realization to you and your
dear ones of this thought.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, U. S.

WASHINGTON, D. C.

To the Publishers

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle:

Will you kindly permit me, through the Chronicle to
extend my greetings to tht. Jewish population of our great
city and state on the occasion of their greatest holy day
of the year? The high place they have attained in the
financial, business and industrial world, together with the
patriotic spirit they have manifested during the most
critical period of the Nation's history, is very gratifying
and encouraging to all Americans and lovers of orderly
Government everywhere. These successes are merely
auguries of greater achievements yet to come.

Very sincerely yours,

Sincerely,

FRANK E. DOREMUS
U. S. Representative
First District, Michigan

UNITED STATES SENATE

The Publishers

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle:

Gentlemen:

Learning of your intention to issue a special edition of
the Chronicle on the Jewish New Year, I congratulate
you upon your enterprise, and wish you and your readers
a Happy New Year.

I desire to express my admiration and gratitude for
the patriotic service and sacrifice which the Jews of
America rendered and made for our common country in
the World War. Such service and sacrifice were unsur-
passed by those of any other class of our people. Their
patriotism and loyalty as a people were never questioned,
and "slackers" and "alien enemies" were rarely found
among their numbers. They are entitled to the commen-
dation of our Republic.

CHARLES E. TOWNSEND
U. S. Senator from Michigan

A NEW YEAR GREETING

By DAVID W. SIMONS

President, Shaarey Zedek Congregation

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle:

It is with gladness in our hearts that we greet our fem.
ilies and friends with a "Happy New Year" on this Rosh
Hashonah, 5680. How much cheerier and happier will
our voices ring with our best wishes this year, How
wonderful is this Rosh Hashonah by contrast with Rosh
Hashonah, 5679.

When we uttered the words, "Happy New Year" one
year ago, it was with sadness and fear in our hearts, for
our boys were on the battlefields of Europe in the great
world struggle, and none dared look forward to a Happy
New Year. Suffering and death stared us in the face.
Our loved ones were in great danger.

Rosh Hashonah, 5680, finds our boys back in our homes,
and we are truly thankful. Let us not forget, however, in
this gladsome time, those heroic boys who made the su-
preme 'sacrifice. With the memory of their noble devo-
tion fixed in our minds, let us resolve to carry on in Peace
the spirit that prompted them to victory in War.

Let us not forget our brethren who are still suffering in
Europe, and resolve to again and again come to their aid.
Let us give thanks that, despite the sad news from Europe,
the world is settling down to a saner and more peaceful
existence, and let us maintain our everlasting hope of a
better day.

To the Jewish Community of Detroit and Michigan I
desire to express my heartiest wishes for a Happy and
Prosperous New Year.
