Barney Barnato
Recalled by Death
of Son, Capt. ' Jack'

An echo of the life and fame of
Barney Barnato, the noted English
diamond king, promoter and specu-
lator, reverberates in the announce-
ment of the recent death of his son.

the Royal Air Force of London, who
passed away at the age of 25, leaving
his widow, Dorothy Barnato, at 19.

Around the adventurous lives of
these individuals one can weave a very
interesting human drama. Captain
"Jack" Bantam was in the Royal Air
Force that bombed Adrianople and
Constantinople and, coming home oil
a furlough after being decorated with
the Distinguished Service Cross, he
got the influena and died. :qrs.
Barnato's mother -- Fanny Ward, a
Broadway' chorus girl at 15—married
Joe Lewis, the diamond broker, with
a million a year income, and became
the idol of a Broadway set which
kicked the lights out of chandeliers
and relighted them with $5 bills. She
had two town mansions, a palace near
Buckingham, and jewels that were the
envy of duchesses. One of her vagar-
ies was an ermine walking suit and a
sealskin tailor-made, and she bought
her pearl rope by the yard. But a
sensational divorce by Lewis followed.
The father had settled $250,000 upon
the daughter, Dorothy, at the time of
her birth, and gave her another mil-
lion at the time of the divorce.
Barney Baritato's rise was the mar-
vel of a generation ago. At one time
he was reputed to be worth $85,000.000,
and at the time of his death—a suicide
at sea, because of ill health—he left a
fortune of over $35,000,000. Barney
Barnato was first an actor and then
a diamond dealer. With $15,000 he pur-
• hased four claims in the Kimberly
mine, which soon brought him an in-
come of $9.000 a week. In 1880 he
visited London and established the
firm of Barnato Brothers, financiers
and diamond dealers.
On his return he floated his first
I company, the Barnato Diamond Ifni
ling Company, for $500,000, w hich paid
him a dividend of 3b per cent per year.
I At the height of his financial career
lie enjoyed the confidence of the pub-
lic to such an extent that in a single
day $5,500,000 was suliscribed for
shares in one of his enterprises.
Ile became a member of the Kim-
berly Legislature. In November, 1895,
the Lord Mayor of London gave a
banquet in honor of Barnato, who,
wishing to be under no obligations,
handed a church for $50,000 to him as
a donation to the fund of the poor in
whose welfare the Lord Mayor was
then actively interested.
Events resulting from the Jameson
Raid into the Transvaal, which jeop-
ardized Barnato's interests, compelled
him to return to South Africa. where
he remained to adjust his affairs. Hop-
ing to benefit his health by a sea voy-
age, he sailed for England in care of
his wife and two nurses, but he grew
no better. While in a state of frenzy,
he eluded his attendants, jumped
overboard and was drowned. His
body was recovered and now lies in
the Jewish cemetery in London.
He left a vast estate. As an ama-
teur actor, Barnato was a never-
failing attraction, especially as "Mat-
thias" in "'The Bells." He lift two
sons, one of whom has just died. An-
other son married Miss Joel, the

Besides the many novel and educa-
tional exhibits, a program of unsur-
passed entertainment events has been
arranged. These will include an au-
tomobile race for prizes totaling $10,-
0111 in cash; a special match race he-
t•ern the fallouts driver Disbrow and
the aviatrix Ruth Law. Among the
features will be the A. K. C. dog show,
horse show, Wild Life of Michigan
display, S. Victory exhibit, mount-
ed police drills. poultry show, auto-
mobile show, million-dollar live stock
parade, six days of harness and run-
ning races. vaudeville and circus acts,
Con T. Kennetl•'s Midway abOWs,
auto polo, the "Battle of Chaldean-
Thierry," babe show, body-building
contest. boys' state fair school, boys'
and girls' canning contests. Louis
Gertson, aviator, and many additional
attractions.

During the past year 731 children
were harbored by the Brooklyn He-
brew Orphan Asylum. The per cap.
ita cost of maintenance was $245
against $190 for 1917 and $156.24 for
1915.
