Lieut. Tolchan operated in the Ar-
gonne - Meuse sevtpr during the tre-
mendous wive that broke Inc back of

He participated in ten bombing raids,
and among the places he alone
dropped over a ton of high explosit es,

It is an interesting fact that the
only Jewish boys in tins group of four
squadrons were Lieut. I olchan and
his observer, Lieut. Herman Fein-
stein of Columbus, Miss. This pair
were together all the time and they
participated in more raids than any
other team in the group. Tolchan
came through the war without a

lieves books to be more helpful than
anything else he could give-

Tolchan enlisted on July 5th, 1917.
He trained with the Royal Flying
Corps in Canada, then in Texas, and
later at Salisbury Plain, England. He
was sent to the Aero School at Tern-
berry, Scotland, where he became aero
acrobatic instructor. For some time
he was attached to the Central Dis-
vatch Pool, whose business it was to
fly new machines across the channel
to France. Tolchan made this his-
toric trip many times in the remark-
able time of 25 minutes.

Lieut. Tolchan is a graduate of the
Engineering Dept. of the Michigan
Agricultural College, class of 1914.
Before the war he was connected with
the engineering staff of the City of
Detroit.

Jewish and Gentile students was nar-
rowly averted last Wednesday after-
noon when the Chancellor and Facul-
ty of New York University inter-
vened and granted several demands
of • the Jewish students. The chief
reason for the indignation and bitter-
ness among the Jewish students was
the fact that the Gentile students had
called a secret meeting on Tuesday
night, in which they passed a resolu-
tion demanding that America should
not intervene on behalf of the Jews
in the pogrom countries.
