CHICAGO, 11.1..—Dr. Rudolph I.
Coffee's undaunted faith in mankind
has redeemed another soul to society,
and incidentally fobbed the world of
its most successful and hunted bur-
glar
A few years ago one Ike Kaminsky,
man-of-the-world and professional
y('ggnian, was known broadcast as
head of a "million-dollar burglar
trust" with headquarters in Chicago.
His ''gang," tinder his expert and
personal supervision, put burglary on
all efficient business basis. He was
the terror and fear of police. All
sensational robberies necessitating
glaring headlines in the press could
safely be laid to Ike's gang. His
path of crime was strewn with
broken padlocks and elusive clues
that could never be successfully pur-
sued. He was hailed as "the greatest
burglar in the world."
1 hen came a day of indiscretion.
Sonic one of the gang twisted the
w ires. Ike Kaminsky was arrested
and sentenced to a long term of im-
prisonment. Resentful, apathetic, in-
different, by turn, the master criminal
sat through the trial. The sentence
seemed to awaken him. Something
long dormant in the man's nature
awoke. Desperately he made a plea
for clemency—to be given a single
chalice to reform.
1)r. Rudolph 1. Coffee of Chicago,
rabbi of Temple Judea, former Social
Service I)irector of the Brith,
an interested spectator at the trial,
heard the man's plea and believed.
He asked to stand sponsor for the
burglar during his term of probation.
The police, amazed at the Rabbi's
fearlessness. , protested strenuously.
Ike was a hardened criminal, a bold
defier of law and order. No good
could ever come of it. Best let him
serve out his sentence.
But Dr. Coffee's faith in human na-
titre withstood all arguments. The
man was released on probation, on
Dr. Coffee's cognizance.
Slowly, conscientiously, with the
guidance of his benefactor, Ike
climbed the path to decency and clean
living. Then came the world war. At
the first news that the foiled States
had declared war on Germany. the
enlisted. He has served eighteen
months with the U. S. forces in
France and returned recently front
overseas wearing two scarlet wound
stripes. He was one of the historic
battalion that fought at Chateau
Thierry and his military record is one
of which any man !night be proud. In
fact his record was so good that he
was put in charge of a guard for
German prisoners. In a letter to 1)r.
Coffee written from Camp Merritt on
his arrival front overseas. Ike said Ile
was positively through with the old
life and would now set himself on the
path of righteousness and good citi-
zenship.
lie is hack in Chicago now, lead-
ing a decent and wholesome life And
thus Ike Kaminsky, professional
burglar. has redeemed himself, has
found for himself a decent niche in
the scheme of things—and all be-
cause of a fellow-being's faith and
trust.
