HE MORTALITY RATE
HIGH IN JERUSALEM

Mr. Hoofien, manager of the Anglo-
Palestine Company, who was for a
time in charge of the distribution of
r elief funds, recently collected statis-
tics concerning the increasing rate of
mortality in Jerusalem. His investi-
gations show that the death rate
amongst the Sephardic Jews (except-
ing the Yemenites and Mountain
Jews) was '27.5 per thousand during
the year 1913-14 and rose to 96.3 dur-
ing the year 1915-16. In the follow-
ing year it was still as high as 72.0
per thousand. The tnortality amongst
the Ashkenazim (excepting the Chas-
sidim) was somewhat lower. In the
year before the war it was 26.7 per
thousand. In 1915-16 it rose to 85.0,
and sank to 74.6 in 1916-17. It will
be remembered that the typhus epi-
demic was raging in 1915-16. The year
1913-14 was a year when the mortal-
ity rate was normal.

BESSARABIAN JEWRY
READY, TO EMIGRATE

The Busiest and Biggest

East Side Jeweler.

LONDON. The sufferings of the
Bessarabian Jews under Roumanian
rule are daily increasing. In Chotin,
Roumanian soldiers shot ninny Jelys and
the victims were left unburied. In
Sorcky, officials had the Jews Leb
Trochanz and Freeman shot. The lat-
ter was the representative of the Paris
Ika and the agricultural school. In
many other Bessarabian cities, Jews
were robbed and beaten. Jewish schools
in Bessarabia are being gradually closed
and Roumanian schools are taking their
places.
The chief accusation against the Jews
of Bessarabia is that they are spreading
Bolshevism there. The Bessarabian
Jews would be pleased if an Inter-Allied
commission were to investigate these
accusations. If their condition does not
improve, they are all ready to emigrate,
if there will only be such a possibility.

Save Money on TIRES

Because so large a percentage of
the 77th Division is composed of
Jewish boys, one forgets that the
National Guard counted among its
numbers many Jews. Many New
York Jewish boys enlisted in the
165th Infantry •(the old Fighting
69th) and the citations for bravery
include many Jewish names.
The officers of that famous organ-
ization all speak in the highest terms
of the courage and efficiency of its
Jewish members and officers and
Father Duff, its well-known chaplain,
tells of the esteem in which they
were held.
Speaking of the religious faith
Father Duffy said:
"War brings out the real brother-
hood that exists between the differ-
ent elements in the American people.
Our regiment is a good example. Two
of our field officers, for instance, have
names that are anything but Irish.
Yet there were no stronger 69th men
among ou Mac's and (Ps than Majors
Bootz and Merle-Smith. My mass
outfit was always in the keeping of
Sergeant Goldstein and it couldn't
have been looked after better if I
left it with Tom O'Malley or Tim
Sullivan.
"There is no brotherhood that no
surely kills off all the lesser preju-
dices as the brotherhood of arms. In
battle a good man is a good man, and
everybody boosts him. That's the
reason why this regiment is happy
and proud to be under the men that
command it today. Every last one of
the officers won the rank he holds by
actual fighting. The best thing of all
is that We are home at last"
