public.

A FEW DAYS AGO I MADE A TOUR of
the Pennsylvania and West Virginia coal
fields. I was there to investigate the situa-
tica for myself. I hardly expected to run
into some of the conditions that awaited me.

WHEREVER I WENT there was an atmos-
phere of discontent and pessimism. The
miners are grumbling and threatening; the
operators are dissatisfied with their profits;
conditions looked very bad.

I AM POINTING these conditions out to you
because they concern your own health, hap-
piness and comfort to no uncertain degree.
If there is a coal shortage it will affect you
in common with everyone else.

"THERE WILL BE A SHORTAGE, with-
out fail," was the word passed to me on
every side, "because there is a possibility of
the greatest strike that has ever tied up a
nation. Believe me, it won't be back to the
mines for us."

THESE CIRCUMSTANCES SEEM TO BE
the natural re-action from war-time condi-
tions. The suspension of the Fuel Adminis-
tration, and of actual war necessity have
served to create a situation that is very bad.

TILE GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZES this
series of conditions, and the Fuel AdnUnis-
ation, before suspending, called upon the
people of the country to forestall a fuel
famine next winter, by laying in the coal
supply right now.

NOW YOU CAN UNDERSTAND just what
the fuel situation is, and knowing it, you are
in a position to lay in your next winter's
supply. Right now there is a very adequate
supply both of Anthracite and o: Bituminous
Coal.

WE HAVE ALWAYS GIVEN our own cus-
tomers the best of service, supplying them
with the kinds of coal that were most in
demand when the supply was at its worst.
We are now able, willing, and eager to serve
other householders.

THERE IS A STRONG SENTIMENT
among the foreign laborers, moreover, to re-
turn to Europe. there to spend the money
they have earned in America. The coal pro-
ducers depend very largely upon this class
of labor.
