PARIS—In the struggle between
the Ukrainians and the Poles, which
the Inter-Allied Commission has
been sent to mediate, the . Jews in the
contested region stand in a precari-
ous position. To begin with, this
commission—quite evidently under
the influence of the Polish Govern-
ment of Krakow—has been spread-
ing hateful rumors that the Jews are
in league with the Bolshevik). In a
cable to the Peace Conference, the
Commission stated that a plot, un-
der Jewish leadership, had set itself
to introduce the ililslievR Regime
in Poland, and that a secrFt Jewish
organization was supposed to have
stored somewhere, a large amount of
arms and explosives.
That the official reports of the
Commission have been highly col-
ored by Polish influence, is further
seen in their verdict relative to the
Ukrainian struggle in Galicia. 'rhos
taking the part of the Poles, the
Commission ruled that the Ukrainian
city of Lemberg, with all the tribu-
taries of the river Soon, should be
given over to Poland. This has had
the effect of turning the Social-Dem-
ocratic Ukrainian Government from a
friend of the Allies, into an enemy.
Thus refusing to make peace with
the Poles, the Ukrainians have made
a new attack upon Lemberg.
The Jews of the fated district, re-
membering the last Polish Pogroms,
are expecting still worse terrors,
should the Poles be victorious. Lem-
heed having liven disorganized com-
pletely by the Poles, the desolation
there is said to be V ores than ever
before, many of the poor there fall-
ing in the streets from death-hunger.
