consideration of serious questions.

Culture and Human Civilization.

Two years before the outbreak of the war Mr. Jacob II. Schiff
gave one hundred thousand dollars to Cornell University "to promote

studies in German culture." Since that time Mr. Schiff has requested
the University authorities to substitute the words "human civilization"

for "German culture." Human civilization and German culture since
the outbreak of the war have been considered mutually exclusive terms.

They will be so considered long after Germany has been thrashed to
her knees. :\ nation which has disobeyed every human law, which has

revelled in the sinking of hospital ships, the destruction of innocent
babes and the ravaging of virtuous women, cannot erase in a decade

what it has taken a century to perfect. It will undoubtedly be years
before 'Germany can make the world believe that she possesses human

civilization. Certainly the world will never again accept her claims to
culture because the kind of culture advocated by her will have no place

in an awakened and reconstructed world. A radical departure from

fine feeling superintendent begged the
board for permission to withdraw the
older children from the public schools
and reconstitute classes within the
orphan asylum because the orphan
children were better educated, better
mannered, and more sensitise than
the other children."
Where did Mr. Butzel get this in-
formation? Even though he were
correct, which he is not, why does
he pronounce this alleged occur-
rence "the most tragic moment in the
history of the orphan asylum?" This
is in line with his former expression
of the fancied misfortune of having
"Kaddish recited through eternity by
the orphan children for good old peo-
ple . . ." The above quoted state-
ment is dangerous because it is mis-
leading and places our institutions in
a wrong attitude before the commu-
nity. I fail to comprehend his meta-
phor or his purpose in making the
allegations.

Though Mr. Butzel may find new
points in this letter as he failed to ob-
serve them in my previous one—an
evidence of his change of his views—
and though we still may differ to
some degree, we agree, however, that
our discussions were conducted in
the amiable spirit which is ever char-
acteristic of him.
