The idea of the Detroit Patriotic Fund is Jewish, for the Jew has al- ways favored federation of charitable enterprises. Individual Jews are playing a great part in the organiza- tion of the Detroit l'atriotic Fund and are lending their every ounce of en- ergy to its ultimate success. In the forefront is David A. Brown, the emi- nently successful general director of previous Jewish War Relief drives. As head of the local Jewish War Re- lief work and as director of the big $5,000,000 Jewish Relief drive in New York City last year, Mr. thrown has acquired a knowledge and efficiency in raising money for public purposes that is a credit to himself and the Jewish community of Detroit. Mr. Brown's ability was readily recognized by all the people of Detroit and his appointment as Vice-President of the Detroit Patriotic Fund followed. Mr. Brown has spent all of his time for the past three or four weeks in the offices of the Fund on Griswold street. He has truly enlisted in the "land furors" for humanity. ' Henry M. Fechinier is a member of the Board of Directors of the Fund. - Help us, fellow Jews of America! \Ve are starving and dying. Send us food! Send us clothing! Send us medical aid! Alleviate our terrible sufferings. 0, Help us, Help us!!" "Fins heartrendering cry from the unfortunate Jews of blood-soaked Eu- rope and Asia has been heard by the Jews of Detroit during the past long years of this devastating war and they have responded nobly and gen- erously. This year the cry is more in- sistent and more urgent. A crisis is fast approaching. The Jews of America must answer in greater de- gree. It is not enough that they give nobly and generously. They must sacrifice some of their own luxuries and expensive conveniences and re- spond to the very limit. The ques- tion this year is not how much to give, but how much to leave for oneself. The Jews of America and the Jews of Detroit must and will act quickly that their fellow Jews across the waters may not perish. The cry of the suffering Jew is mingled this year as never before with the appeal for succor from the suffer- ing Pole, and Belgian, and Rou- manian, and Armenian and every other people who have felt the cruel hand of the Prussian tyranny. It is the cry of suffering humanity which is expressed in no particular tongue and which concerns no particular race or creed. The appeal for aid from Europe comes from humanity to the people of America, from Cath- olic. Protestant and Jew, to Catholic, Protestant and . 1 CIA'. It Will be an- swered in the spirit of the Red Cross, Which alleviates suffering universally. Flue Detroit Patriotic Fund com- bines all pleas for money fur war re- lief purposes for every creed and nationality. Besides the civilian war relief, it includes the funds of the Y. M. C.
