ZIONIST CONVENTION
FOR 1918 IN PITTSBURG

Twenty-first Annual Meeting of Zion-
ists Will Discuss Political and
Economic Needs for
Jewish State.

The next convention of the Zionist
Organization of America will be held
in Pittsburgh for the week beginning
Sunday, June 23, and ending on the
evening of Thursday, June 27. The
Pittsburgh Zionists are already busy
with preliminary arrangements, and
are organizing strong committees to
handle all of the elaborate details
that will be necessary for the success-
ful conduct of the most im p ortant
cons ention ever held in the history
of the Zionist movement.
Since last June when the Zionists
convened in Baltimore, practically
every Allied country in Europe, led
by Great Britain and most of the Al-
lied countries, have declared them-
selves in favor of the establishment
of a Jewish national homeland in
Palestine, and have given or have
pledged themselves to give to the aims
and purposes of the Zionist move-
ment that public recognition and le-
gal assurance which is the basic prin-
ciple of the Basle program. British
arms have successfully cleared the
way for the actual work of restora-
tion. 'The Jewish Administrative
Commission, the first Jewish govern-
mental body in Palestine in 2,000
years, is already quartered in Tel
Aviv, the beautiful suburb of Jaffa.
A definite program has been worked
out by this commission which is
charged with the duty of laying the

foundation for rehabilitated Pales-
tine, for a Jewish state which . shall
be an adequate answer to the ideals
of government and social justice that
the Jews have carried in their souls
during the centuries of oppression.
A Jewish regiment, organized in Lon-
do :1, is already in Palestine and on
its way to the battle front. Over a
t•ousand young men have joined the
Jewish legion that is going to Pales-
tine from .Nmerica. Throughout the
world a vast sum of money has been
raised for the purposes of the Jewish
Administrative Conimission. Ameri-
can Jewry has thus far contributed
over $1,0011,000 toward this fund.

500 Societies Represented.
All of this will be embodied in the
reports that will he made at the
I Ittsburgh Convention, at which
there will be delegates from 500 so -
cieties. l'he Convention will con-
cern itself with concrete Palestinian
problems and its work roughly di-
vided, will fall into two categories:
(a) political, (b) economic. The dis-
cussions at this convention will deal
w ith the Jewish State as a reality and
with practical work in Palestine.
\N'ays and mean': will be devised for
carrying forward what has been so
auspiciously begun, and to make cer-
tain of its permanent character.
The Pittsburgh committee us plan-
ning to make the convention head-
quarters at the Shenley Hotel and to
utilize the many public buildings in
the neighborhood for convention ses-
sions, mass meetings, and social func-
tions. The Federation executives
have every reason to believe that the
Pittsburgh convention will surpass
all preceding conventions in the
way of attendance, enthusiasm and
interest.
