Free Synagogue Pays Tribute to
kamous Rabbi Completing Tenth
Year as Leader.
New York.—As a tenth anniversary
tribute Dr. Stephen S. \Vise, rabbi of
the Free Synagogue, was presented
by the Executive Council with a schol•
arship fund for rabbinical training for
young men, at the services in Carne-
gie Hall, Sunday morning. Addresses
praising Dr. Wise's work were made
by President Henry Morgenthau, of
the synagogue; Ambassador Abram I.
Elkus and Nathan Straus. The schol-
arship is called the "Stephen S. \Vise
Fellowship Fund" and amounts to live
thousand dollars a year for three
years.
Mr. Morganthatt said one of the
most merited parts of Rabbi \Vise's
work was his attitude toward the !nor-
;Os of the country. His stand, made
known to all the world, had lifted the
whole nation, and lie had a congre-
gation that was nation-wide.
"His work," said Mr. Elkus, "is
wonderful. 'Ile has the love, esteem
and affection of the entire congrega-
tion. His is a great ability and a re-
markable industry. The congregation
admires beyond measure his wonder-
ful expresso!' of mind and heart.''
In his reply Dr. Wise said it was a
"democratic" rather than a "reform"
synagogue, and that if he had the last
ten years to live over again he would
do exactly as he had done. "We are
not a reform people," he continued,
"but I am the rabbi of a liberal syna-
gogue. I am a Jew first and last. I
husk you to renew your fealty to Juda-
ism. Have a care lest liberal Judaism
becomes such a dead, lifeless forma-
\ ion as reform Judaism, I want to
bring back the wonder, the marvel
and mystery of Judaism, rooted in
the vision of God. Give one your
,sons; dedicate your children to the
ministry; serve America as proud,
'self-determining Jews."
