RABBI LEO M. FRANKLIN,

nterest to the

expressed by the writers.

Morgenthau's Significant Utterance

on Zionism

the inam expression. anent /iolosin wills winch. since the

fall of Jerusalem, the public and secular press have been teeming, we

have failed to see another utterance that, for sanity and gaud sense, at

all compares with the remarkable communication sent to the New York

Times by N1r. Henry Nlorgenthau.

What ti r. Nlorgenthau has to say upon this subject takes on unusual
significance from the fact that in the tirst place, 1w is an ardent Jew

and in the second, he speaks from first-hand knowledge of the condi-
tions that affect present-day Palestine. He m neither impractical in his

idealism like some extreme Zionists, nor is he rabid and unreasonable

in his opposition like some within the ranks of the anti-Zionists. leis

thought upon the subject is clear and his words are lucid. Ile is deeply

sympathetic with the Zionistic ideal, as indeed all thinking Jews, even

among nun-Zionists must be, but he is sincerely concerned lest in the

exultation of the moment, Zionists be led into speaking foolish words

and undertaking activities in which there may lurk great hidden dangers

to the Jews of the world. Among other things he says:

"I most sincerely trust that those of my religious faith who are now
imbued with this idea will not permit impracticable schemes to make im-
possible the realization of the good that is in Zionism. The Jewish com-
munities in Palestine should hr given every opportunity for development.
Some Jews now in America will wish to live there permanently. many
others, who have not the slightest intention of surrendering their citizen-
ship in the countries where their children are to live and work, will shill
wish to have a share in the preservation and development of a free,
Jewish Palestine."

Nonetheless with wisdom and %vitt' insight such as one might expect

in a man of 11r. Nlorgenthau's experience, he goes on to its in words

the clear implication of which cannot be mistaken:

"But not only Jews are interested in Palestine; every truly edu-
cated and liberal-minded person in the world will wish to see the ancient
Jewish culture given an opportunity for expression and growth. turther-

more, and this is what I beg nay Jewish fellow religionists not to lase sight

Zionism have been saying all along, does Mr. Nlorgenthau prove himself

to be a 'Sone Zion,' i, e., a 'hater of Zion,' as these Reform Rabbis have

been called?" Or does lie set himself up as a sponsor of a "Judaism

that is denatured, devoid of most of what is distinctly, uniquely, pecul-

iarly and vitally Jewish?" Is Mr. Nlorgenthau's Judaism "bankrupt"?

Or, on the contrary, is he not voicing a sentiment that is permeated with

the Jewish spirit and does he not stand out as a Jew who believes, as

most 1(efortn Jews believe, that Judaism has in it enough virility and

enough vitality' to endure and to flourish in any environment ?

For, it must be rementlivred that when nun-Zionists held that Zion-
ism is a misreading of the destiny of the Jew in the world, they d o not

at all set themselves in opposition to the establishment of a legally

secured home for the Jews in Palestine. They . are nut so poor in Jewish

spirit as not to rejoice in the possibility of re-establishing in ;t land that

teems with sacred associations a large number of Jews now in lands of

oppression and of giving to them the opportunity' Id. living a full, free

and happy life.

But they hold that this should be but one ifomefand out of manv

for the Jew and that wheresoever he (liaises to lull! his life and to realize

his ideals, he should be given the opportunity to do so unhampered and

unhindered.

Let Zionists concede that Palestine should he a Homeland for Jews

and not Nye //onte/ond fur all Jews and let them further tifticially endorse
the opinion that is now held by s o me sIll , litactlly loyal Zionists that "a

publicly. recognized ;o ld legally secured hone in Palestine" does out of

necessity imply a political state, and a great torward step will have 'wen

taken to bring about unit). among the warring huts of modern Israel.

This opinion is :11-0 implied by Nit- . lorgentliati in t h e conclusion of his

Jewishite , .. none dare question, holds that Judaism has in it that vitality
which will permit it to flourish in any environment. Nay, lie holds that

Judaism has a better chance to test out its strength with other religions

and amid twentieth century surroundings than if hemmed in by a wall

of isolation. One needs not to lack in the sentimental appreciation of

the Zionistic ideal nor to be wanting in a sense of Jewish feeling to see

in Air. Nlorgenthatt's keen analysis of the subject at issue a suggestion

of value to non-Zionists and a timely word of warning to thos e w ithi n

the Zionistic camp.
