Banker Starts Campaign to Raise $5,000,000 for Jewish Relief

and for Welfare Board.

New York.—Jacob H. Schiff has
given $200,000 to start the $5,000,000
New York campaign for Jewish
war relief and for Jewish Wel-
fare Board in the United States Army
and Navy, it was announced last Wed-
nesday by David A. Brown, who is to
direct the campaign from Dec. 3 to
Dec. 15. Mr. Schiff announced the
gift at a meeting yesterday, to which
were invited representatives of • the
Jewish newspapers in New York. This
contribution makes a total of consid-
erably more than half a million dol-
lars, which Mr. Schiff has personally
given to Jewish War Relief in the last
two years. At a dinner held at the
Hotel Savoy several months ago Mr.
Schiff gave $100,000, and he has on
several other occasions given equally
large sums.
Present at the meeting were Henry
Morgenthau end Nathan Straus, who,
with Mr. Schiff, made addresses out-
lining what is to be done during the
campaign and the reasons for it. Mr.
Schiff declared that unless the Jews of
America worked together in the pres-
ent war, both to assist the Govern-
ment and to help European Jewry,
American Jews would be compelled to
suffer together. Word was received

yesterday from Brooklyn that that
borough plans to raise half a million
dollars toward the five million, in con-
junction with its campaign for the
Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Chari-
ties. Simon F. Rothschild and Nathan
Jonas head the Brooklyn members of
the committee.
Nathan. Straus and Henry Morgen-
thau dwelt upon the fact that in the
forthcoming campaign Ncw York
Jewry is absolutely united and that for
this reason, great as is the undertak-
ing, success may be looked for with
all factions pulling together. They
both expressed their appreciation of
Mr. Schiff's having laid aside personal
considerations to lead the campaign in
New York in response to the demands
made upon him to do so.

The coining of Dr. Stephen S. Wise
of New York as the principal speaker
of the Sixteenth Citizens' Interde-
nomination Thanksgiving Service, will
add especial interest to the services
this year, and will, no doubt, serve to
tax the seating capacity of the De-
troit Opera House to its utmost.
1)r. Wise is a man of national fame
as a pulpit orator and his message is
always forceful and timely. As fitting
the occasion he will speak at the
service on the topic, "America's War
and America's Thanksgiving."
In the Service this year the follow-
ing denominations are represented:
Christian
Congregational
Unitarian
Methodist
Universalist
Baptist
Jewish
Presbyterian
Roman Catholic
Episcopalian

(Continued from page 3)
stated that although he was a much
older man than the active workers, he
was still inspired with the eagerness
to do his "bit" and that he was still in
the fight "to the'finish," This senti-
ment was vociferously applauded.
For the purpose of the coming cam-
paign for $50,000 the city has been di-
vided into ten districts in accordance
with a carefully worked-out plan by
Mr. Abe Schiliman, District leaders
will be appointed and a systematic
canvass undertaken.
An intensive drive among the wo-

RABBI FREUND OF GRAND RAP-
IDS ASKS AID FOR BATTLE
CREEK JEWS.

Battle Creek, Mich., Nov. 16, 1917.
To the Editor, Jewish Chronicle:
I have visited Battle Creek and
Camp Custer. What the small hand-
ful of Jewish people in Battle Creek
are doing for the Jewish boys at
Camp Custer is remarkable. But there
is a limit to what may, be expected of
these people here to supply hospitality
and comfort for upward of 200 Jewish
young men. The rest of the state of
Michigan and Wisconsin should step
in or the work will fail. The near
approach of Hanuccah should be
seized upon to supply the boys—who
are our pride—with the comforts they
so richly deserve. Detroit and Grand
Rapids and other Michigan cities,
awake, or the opportunity will pass
and some of us may keenly regret that
we failed when our duty was simple
Cordially yours,
and easy.
RABBI CHARLES J. FREUND.

The music will be furnished by a
double quartet under the leadership
of Mr. Jason Moore, musical director
of the Church of Our Father, and by
Mr. William Howland, choir director
of Temple Beth El. The offertory will
be given to the Red Cross Society.
Services in the Opera House will be-
gin promptly at 10:30.
Of the original founders of this I n-
terdenomination Service, Rabbi Frank-
lin is the only minister still residing
in Detroit. Messrs. Henry M. Leland,
Frank D. Taylor and Judge Alfred J.
Murphy have taken an active interest
in the movement almost from its
foundation, sixteen years ago.
This service has come to play a
very important part in the religious
life. of Detroit. Similar services are
now held in Buffalo, Saginaw and in
several - other cities.
