others and Mothers! Consider the Navy
As the Place for Your Boys to
Serve Their Fu) !
Think what the navy offers them in addition to the opportunity to serve their country.
The navy • will pay their transportation to one of its four fine Training Stations. It will
supply them with a complete outfit of clothing—shoes, underwear, cap, sweater, overcoat,
rubber boots, etc., for winter and summer—enough for two years and to the value of $60,
free of charge. Next it will give them a splendid training. They will be taught to keep their
clothes and person neat and clean; to stand and walk as a man should; to respect themselves
and others ; to- row and sail a boat ; to handle and shoot a rifle and revolver ; to make knots
and splices with ropes; to heave the lead, box the compass and other rudiments of seaman-
ship; and if they need it, they will get an hour each day in reading, writing and arithmetic.
And they will get paid $— a month all the time, with their meals, lodging, doctor and dentist
free of charge.
After drill and study hours are over, their time is their own; they can read (there is a
good library of fiction and text books), write letters, play basket ball, foot ball or base ball,
etc.
When their training is finished they will have a ten-day furlough to visit home and
they will be advanced in rating and wages.
There are many more reasons why you should

The navy will give him an education. He will always be sure of a safe, warm bed to
sleep in. His food and medical attention will be of the best. Chaplains in training stations
or aboard ship will encourage or look after his religious and moral development and his ship
will remove him from the temptations that beset many a man on land.
To enlist, a man must be an American citizen, native born or fully naturalized, between
the ages of 18 and 35. Men subject to draft but not yet called before their local boards for
physical examination can still enlist in the navy. If they wait to be called before their local
boards for physical examination they have no choice in the matter. They must serve where
sent.
Why not help your sons decide the vital question. Send them down or bring them in
for physical examination. Find out whether or not they can pass the examination. Get that
point settled, then make your decision. Act at once. Come down during the day or any
evening before 8:00.
