THE JEWISH CHRONICLE

A.

Society

The Young Men's Hebrew As-
sociation will hold a dance at the
Shaarcy Zedek synagogue, Willis
and Brush Sts., on Sunday even-
ing, November 18.

Sydney A. Jacobs, one of the
members of the younger set, has
left Detroit for Fort Worth, Tex.,
where he is in training with the
Signal Corps. Mr. Jacobs is a
charter member of the Amici
Club. He leaves behind him a
host of vell-wishing friends.

From present indications the
informal dancing party to be
given by the Young People's
Auxiliary of the Hebrew Hospi-
tal Association, Sunday evening,
November 25, in the ball room of
the Statler Hotel, gives every
promise of eclipsing both artis-
tically and financially all former
functions given by this organiza-
tion. The cordial invitation
which was extended to the gen-
eral public has met with extraor-
dinary returns, as the diversified
activities of the Hospital Associa-
tion are recognized throughout
the city. Heretofore the attend-
ance will be worthy of the cause.
The committee in charge are
Harry Sat ov sky, chairman ;
Misses Helen E. Weisberg, Rose
Stepsay, Sophia Ackerman, Edith
Fierstein, Clara Weisman,
Messrs. Sigfried Radlauer, S. S.
Tanzman, Abe Fishbein. Its
members, many of whom are well
known among Jewish society cir-
cles, voluntarily give their time.
Tickets have been widely distrib-
uted and are 50c each.

Among those attending the
Michigan-Cornell game, at Ann
Arbor, this week, are the Misses
Rita King, Helen Hubar, Annette
King and Rose Hubar. They are
also being entertained as house-
guests over the week-end by the
Phi Sigma Delta fraternity.

The cake and bag sale held last
week at the Madison Theater build-
ing for the benefit of the Detroit
Tuberculosis Sanitorium by a group
of Jewish women under direction
of Mrs. Harry Goldstein succeeded
in raising sufficient money to pur-
chase a complete motion picture
outfit for the patients.

OBITUARY

DETROIT, MICH.

726 Brush Street

Mrs. Rosa C. Herzog.
One of Detroit's earliest Jewish
pioneers, Mrs. Rosa C. Herzog died
on Saturday, Nov. 3, following an ill-
ness of several months. Mrs. Herzog
was 71 years of age. She was born
in New York City, coming to Detroit
with her parents at the age of 3. Her
68 years' residence in Detroit covers
practically the entire history of the
Jewish community.
Mrs. Herzog was a graduate of the
old Barstow Union school, which
stood on Congress street where now
is Capitol park. The home of her
father, Isaac Cozzens, stood on La-
fayette avenue in the block where now
stands the Dime Bank and Free Press
buildings. The first congregational
meetings of Temple Beth El were held
in her parents' home. Mrs. Herzog
was a life-long member of Temple
Beth El and always took an active
part in congregational work.
Her husband, Henry Herzog, died
in 1893. Funeral services for Mrs.
Herzog were held from her home, 253
Hazelwood avenue, on Monday after-
noon, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin and
Rabbi Maverburg officiating. Surviv-
ing Mrs. Herzog are her three daugh-
ters, Mrs. Harry Goldstein, Mrs. Jo-
seph Gould, Mrs. Magnus A. Hirsch-
field and two sons, Adolph E. and Irv-
ing C. Herzog.

Miss Ida Fine.
Miss Ida Fine, Yiddish stage favor-
ite and leading lady of the Yiddish
Stock company which plays Sundays
in the Detroit opera house, died last
Saturday night, following an opera-
tion for appendicitis. She had been
playing in Detroit since early in Sep-
tember and three weeks ago was taken
ill just before the commencement of
a performance and conveyed to Grace
hospital from the theater.
For three years she was the star in
the Grand theater, New York City,
appearing in 18 performances every
week, and was on several occasions re-
ferred to by New York papers as "the
Jewish Eva Tanguay." She was born
in Bialostok, Russia, 29 years ago, and
had played and studied 15 years in the
United States.
The funeral was held Tuesday after-
noon from the Circle theater, 502
Hastings street, where a memorial
service was held.
