P tone Cadillac 3299 Over 400 people attended a rousing patriotic mass meeting at the Garfield Public School, Rivard and Frederick streets, on Monday evening, October 22, held under the auspices of the North Hastings Street Merchants' Association. The meeting was held for the purpose of arousing interest in the Liberty Loan •campaign and educating the residents of the district in the purposes and objects of the great war. N. H. Goldstick acted as chairman of the meeting. Milton Alexander and Julian H. Krolik delivered stirring talks urging every one to express their patriotism and loyalty not by words, but by acts. The address of the - eve- ning was given by Rabbi Leo M. Frank- lin, who aroused the audience to a high pitch of enthusiasm with an eloquent exposition of the activities of the Jews in this war and why the Jew should ex- ert every effort to aid this government in the successful prosecution of this war, the result of which would bring a universal peace. The vociferous ap- plause which greeted Dr. Franklin's remarks evidenced the sincere loyalty of the audience. The audience joined in singing the national hymns with pa- triotic fervor. Members of the North Hastings Street Merchants' Association were unanimous in their appreciation of the able work of the speakers and also commended their officers, N. Hack, chairman, and Ira Friedenberg, secre- tary, for the able manner in which they had conducted all arrangemnts for the meeting. The success of this assembly has encouraged the association to hold such gatherings often so as to educate the people to matters of public import and incidentally bring all classes togeth- er in a co-operative endeavor to better the civic conditions and general welfare of the immediate community. ZIONIST VICTORIES IN CITY ELECTIONS. Petrograd—In many Russian cities there were held recently city elec- tions, and in all of them it was shown that the only party which has won the support of the Jewish masses is that of the Zionists. In almost all cases the Jewish votes were given unani- mously to Zionists. In those cases where Bundists were elected this was to be traced to the fact that the candi- dates had been nominated by the United Socialist groups, and that their votes consisted largely of those cast by non-Jewish workers. Five Zionists were elected in Oman, Kiev County; three in Peadosia, two in Krasna Yask, one in Roston, one in Batum, 15 in Romney, Poltov County; 25 in Yelisavetgrad, five in Penza, four in Nijny-Novgorod, five in Kursk, four in Savatav, four in Varanedj, four in Orel, two each in Yarraslvl, Tzaritzin, Valovda and Baritoglebsk, and one each in Sevas- tapol, Rudjev, Simperopol and Misht- shensk, and 12 were elected in Home!. The speakers before the class at the last meeting were Mr. Alexander Wall, of the National Bank of Commerce; Frank R. Hamburger and Benjamin L. Lambert. Meetings are held every Wednesday evening at the Central High School building from 7:30 p. m. to 9:30 p. m. This course is one that is high- ly interesting and is of inestimable value to everybody in the business world. Warburg, chaiman of the Joint Distribution Committee, will preside at the assembly, and among the speakers will be Jacob H. Schiff, Louis Marshall, Abram I. Elkus, Her- man Bernstein, the chairmen of the three relief committees, and others. Invitations have been extended to Vis- count Reading, Lord Chief Justice of England, to Baron Ginsburg of the Russian Commission; to United States Supreme Court Justice Louis D, Brandeis, and to Julius Rosen- wald of the Council of National De- fense. This special asembly is expected to be the most important national 'gath- ering of Jews since the European war began. In explaining the purpose of the call, Mr. Warburg said: "It has only been possible to collect this immense sum, unparalleled in the history of the Jews, through the co- operation of all sections of. the com- munity and the whole-souled support of every Jew in America: The re- sponsibility 'of administering this large amount, the largest ever con- tributed to one cause by the Jews of America, and the need for continuing the campaign for raising still further large sums being self-evident, it now becomes imperative for all those who have thus far worked so successfully to come together to plan for the fu- ture."
